A few chapters in and it just wasn't compelling enough to continue. The plot just dragged, and ther characters weren't compelling enough to keep hoping.

I found the story telling to be erratic, and the characted/plot development lacking. I could not get past 2 hours of listening. It just didn't hold my interest.

Witty, thought provoking, well narrated

I love an author-narrated memoir, ESPECIALLY when the memoir is this fantastic. Michael Arceneaux, thank you for your contributions to this earth. I have recommended this book to so many. To hear your own well-written work in your own voice made it so much more personal.

Stellar reading, the story could have aged better

The reading of this was excellent, and the book is well written. I wish I could have better enjoyed such a female-centric novel, but cringed at bits that did not age so well. The author chose to make her characters progressive for their time in race relations, but still used awful language for Indigenous Peoples- and one of the heroic figures was never questioned for how her wealth depended on slave labor, among other things, despite this being a central theme. I wound up disliking the main characters by the end of the book- not because of the author's failure to write well, but because of their development arc. I found the transphobic comments distracting. It hampered my enjoyment of the novel. I was sad to have been so disappointed.

Great work- grating performance

I second other reviewers in that the reading was inexpressive and inappropriately cheerful sounding about a serious topic. The narrator talks through an audible forced smile the entire thing, with no expression or tone variation. Enjoyed the content, but definitely would have preferred to read it.
