Everything the child in me would like to believe

All children who grew up surrounded by the words and ideas slipping through the open cracks of books and stories have looked for doors, the wardrobe, the mirror, the rabbit hole, the cellar door. This story is the key to those doors never found.

In itself it is a beautiful work of historical fiction with magical realism, the characters are engaging, the stakes are real, the story compelling. More than anything, I just love the premise of the book.

A fairy tale with refreshingly real women

One of the best reinterpreted fairy tales I have read in a very long time. The story elegantly intertwines the stories of three young women who must make their own way as they grow up in a strictly patriarchal setting. These young women are not stereotypes, they must not be saved, they are not symbols of beauty and purity. They are real, they are flawed, they are strong while they are allowed to sometimes be weak.

The story is strong and the world immersive, but the best part would have to be the women. I loved the fact, that I didn't always have to like them to admire their strength.

Intriguing premise for a story that falls short

This review is from one who is not a Rush fan and has not heard the album.

I loved the title, I was intrigued with the premise. The story itself could have worked, more drama, more urgency and more initiative from the main character would have done a lot. It had moments where the plot could have taken off. The scene with the Watchmaker looking over one of his once human, mechanical angels had real potential, the gleam in the eye of the angel was a promise that went unfulfilled.

The main character frustrated me, you are allowed to be gullible only for so long, before I start to question character progression. Character growth came only at the very end, and then mostly only in retrospect. This slows the plot as it is not driven so much by character as it is by mere circumstance.

I really wanted to like it, but it fizzed out rather too early.

The narration wasn't great, but neither was it terrible.

It was with a small pang of sorrow I came to the end of Dreams of Gods and Monsters and had to leave Prague and its inhabitants behind. Hearing Zuzanna again, was like finding sudden peacock tracks leading back into the mystery of Prague again. The story is exquisite in itself; in many ways a sweeter love story than that of Karou and Akiva for capturing that fluttering magic of first love. Everything about this production points to perfection: Zuzanna and Violin Boy are brought to life quite convincingly by the narrators, the music and subtle sound effects draws the reader right into Prague. I have never listened to an audiobook where dual narrators and sound effects have contributed so much to the experience, I am beyond impressed. Undoubtedly the best book I have listened to this year!
