Historia
Ashley Perrin is fresh out of college and starting a job as a community liaison for the Third District–the city’s only sector with more alien residents than humans. Ashley’s barely found where the paper clips are kept when she’s beset with constituent complaints–from too much noise at the Annual Lupidian Celebration Parade to a trip-and-fall chicken to a very particular type of alien hornet that threatens the very city itself. And if that’s not terrifying enough, Ashley is next up at the office karaoke night.

Rare miss for Scalzi
Revisado: 10-08-24
Big Scalzi fan, and I’m reluctant to bring a negative opinion to a free book, but this was disappointing. Scalzi is normally good at hiding pending crises/twists/resolutions, but I perfectly predicted the crisis by the “backyard” scene (well before it developed) and the resolution had nothing special.

Historia
Part memoir, part history, Burn Book is a necessary chronicle of tech’s most powerful players. This is the inside story we’ve all been waiting for about modern Silicon Valley and the biggest boom in wealth creation in the history of the world. When tech titans crowed that they would “move fast and break things,” Kara Swisher was moving faster and breaking news. While covering the explosion of the digital sector in the early 1990s, she developed a long track record of digging up and reporting the facts about this new world order.

Historia
Something new entered our world in November 2022—the first general purpose AI that could pass for a human and do the kinds of creative, innovative work that only humans could do previously. Wharton professor Ethan Mollick immediately understood what ChatGPT meant: after millions of years on our own, humans had developed a kind of co-intelligence that could augment, or even replace, human thinking. Through his writing, speaking, and teaching, Mollick has become one of the most prominent and provocative explainers of AI.

Decent as book for AI novices
Revisado: 04-03-24
A brief and pleasant exploration of how AI is shaping the world around us, with tips and suggestions for educators, workers, and students. Best seen as a business book or read by those with little AI exposure.
It's fine to not focus as much on larger AI risk as books can't be about everything, but his reasons for this were not compelling. He said larger existential concerns are disempowering, yet also urged people to become more engaged on the less dramatic AI issues lest their future be decided for them. The same companies and issues are involved in each, so I don't know why he codes them differently.
I sympathize with the difficulties narrating an audiobook but the production would have been better with another narrator.

Historia
Daniel C. Dennett—preeminent philosopher and cognitive scientist—has spent his career creating the basis for a naturalistic account of consciousness with acumen and elegance. I’ve Been Thinking traces the development of Dennett’s own intellect and instructs us how we too can become good thinkers. Dennett’s restless curiosity leads him from his childhood in Beirut to Harvard, and from Parisian jazz clubs to “tillosophy” on his tractor in Maine. Along the way, he reveals the breakthroughs and misjudgments that shaped his paradigm-shifting philosophies.

Well-written & important
Revisado: 12-05-23
This is a great book. It's a thorough yet non-technical exploration of why citizens and policymakers should be concerned by the rapid development of AI capabilities in recent years.
I thought the writing style was very engaging and accessible, and the author clearly discussed the core arguments for why AI poses a different kind of risk than any past human endeavour.
The book discusses harms that have already occurred, and provides thorough reasoning for the concern that even greater harms likely await us should we fail to anticipate and mitigate them.
I really like that the author provided concrete suggestions for public action and policy to guide the development of AI away from the current path of naive rush to risk, towards our common goals of universal human flourishing.

Historia
Much has been written about the challenges tech presents to equality and democracy. But we can either criticize big data and automation or steer it to do better. Lobel makes a compelling argument that while we cannot stop technological development, we can direct its course according to our most fundamental values. With provocative insights in every chapter, Lobel masterfully shows that digital technology frequently has a comparative advantage over humans.

Historia
Today's "machine-learning" systems, trained by data, are so effective that we've invited them to see and hear for us - and to make decisions on our behalf. But alarm bells are ringing. Systems cull résumés until, years later, we discover that they have inherent gender biases. Algorithms decide bail and parole - and appear to assess black and white defendants differently. We can no longer assume that our mortgage application, or even our medical tests, will be seen by human eyes. And autonomous vehicles on our streets can injure or kill.

This is a study of how intellectuals as a class affect modern societies by shaping the climate of opinion in which official policies develop, on issues ranging from economics to law to war and peace. You will hear a withering and clear-eyed critique about (but not for) intellectuals that explores their impact on public opinion, policy, and society at large.

As others have said, it's annoying that they broke up the audio into 3 volumes. Yet further, this particular audio book has 4 duplicate chapters at the end. I think they're trying to rectify the unnecessary statements of turning a cassette over but haven't fully fixed it yet.
Still worthwhile as I don't have time to read it.
