Historia
When slighted, misunderstood, cut-in-front-of, annoyed, taken advantage of, or treated rudely, most people avoid their bosses, ignore co-workers, change hairdressers, complain to friends, shout and pound their fists. They often miss the most positive, effective alternative of all: confronting positively. Now, for everyone who was never taught, or never realized, that between "bully" and "wimp" is a range of behavior that is positive, dignified, and effective for dealing with life's bothersome situations.

Wish I'd read it years ago.
Revisado: 05-13-11
I wish I'd learned this stuff as a teen--as a preteen! Refresher courses in college and after would have been nice, too. I've heard the same basic advice that Pachter and Magee give from a number of other sources, but this book goes into useful depth and detail on how to apply that advice at home, on the go, and on the job. Pachter offers up a practical course in conflict resolution that becomes assertiveness training... or vice versa? This self-help book translates well to the audio format, and its content is delivered in manageable and memorable chunks.

Historia
There are all sorts of reasons people procrastinate. What are yours? This book draws on scientific research on procrastination conducted over more than 20 years by the author and his colleagues, to help you learn what stops you from getting things done so that you can find the solutions that will really work. Contrary to conventional wisdom, chronic procrastination is NOT about poor time management, but about self-sabotaging tendencies that can prevent you from reaching your full potential.

A bit of the how-to, and a bit more of the why. Solid material; wide coverage. I give it 4 stars because the areas I found most interesting are the author spent the least amount of time on. But I will be listening to this one again.

An interesting and engaging book. I had no idea where it would take me, which was fun for a change. It was like Blade Runner (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep), but with fungus. Lots, and lots of fungus.

Historia
January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she’s never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb.... As Juliet and her new correspondent exchange letters, Juliet is drawn into the world of this man and his friends - and what a wonderfully eccentric world it is.

I wish this book would never end.
Revisado: 05-13-11
Stellar audio performances bring each character to unique and charming life in this delightful epistolary novel. I know and love these characters, and they, and Guernsey, and World War II, become real in a way few other books manage. I laugh, I cry, I learn. When I finished listening to this book for the first time, I did something that I have never done before--or since: I immediately listened to it again.

More teenage vampires...
Revisado: 04-28-11
Honestly, I listened to this because the description sounded fluffy and fun, supernatural, but not more of the same old, same old. I was hoping it wouldn't be another vampire book. And it is fun, though angsty, and the mythology takes a few different twists and turns that I really enjoyed, but.... it's basically another vampire book. This one was enjoyable, but I am currently bored of vampire books...

Engrossing, but...
Revisado: 02-28-11
This was enjoyable fantasy with engaging characters. But, be warned--the sequels get very, very graphic and sexually explicit. Far too explicit for my taste. Far too gruesome. I still get a little queasy just remembering it.

A Pleasant Surprise
Revisado: 02-28-11
Private eye noir with wizards and magic. I was a bit leery of yet another Charlaine Harris or Stephenie Meyer clone, but this book is neither. Butcher's universe is gritty and real, and his magic and creatures remind me of historical alchemy and folk tales rather than stereotypical sword-and-sorcery fantasy.
What I truly loved about this audio book, though, was the narration. I'd have enjoyed this book if I read it. But I didn't read it--I listened to it. James Marsters' superb narration pulled me into this story from the very beginning, bringing Harry Dresden alive in my MP3 player. I will be listening to more from James Marsters.

Dangerously Dull
Revisado: 02-28-11
For those who love the classic game "Monopoly," I can see where this book might appeal. Our heroine buys, sells, and delivers trade goods. We hear about each transaction, each contract negotiation, each piece of merchandise, in detail. Excruciating detail. The action scenes are few, fast, and furious. The protagonist, though potentially interesting, never quite coalesces into a unified personality, just as the plot never quite coalesces into a coherent arc. If this entire book were condensed into 3 or 4 chapters, it could work as an introduction to a larger story. As a stand-alone book--it's dull, dull, dull. Granted, this is the first in a series, and might work better in that context. For people like me who equate "Monopoly" with "Monotony," however, the first book was so dangerously dull that we'll probably never pick up the sequels.

Story or History?
Revisado: 02-28-11
I enjoyed this book immensely, but I have no idea what the plot was supposed to be. As a fictionalized account of the early developments of science and rationalism in 1600s England and America, this book was fascinating and sometimes hilarious. As a novel with protagonists, antagonists, and conflicts--well...I spent the first 2/3 of the book waiting for the story to start, and the rest thinking, "Wait, that's it?" And yet, listening to this book, as I did, as an episodic narrative of 1600s England and America--it was absolutely fascinating.

Self-Centered Teenage Girls--Honest and Hilarious
Revisado: 09-11-09
The antics of Georgia Nicolson, as related through her diary, are especially hilarious when read aloud by Stina Nielson. Something of the essential English-ness of Georgia and her mates is translated much more effectively through the audio format than the printed word.
There's nothing high-brow about this book--no overwhelming or enlightened commentary about the human condition. Rather, it is the human condition of one 14-year-old school girl, told in open, honest, and unforgettable prose. Being 14 and in the throes of luurrve was never so much fun.
