Historia
A unifying narrative for divided times, Bent Toward Justice tells the story of Murray Schwartzman, a Polish Jew who survived the Holocaust and escaped to America. But while Schwartzman may have found respite from external conflict in his peaceful and supportive American Jewish community, he faces a new internal upheaval. An encounter with an apparently anti-Semitic doctor forces Schwartzman to confront his beliefs about Palestinians being the enemy of the Jewish people.

Historia
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

Held my attention like a vice
Revisado: 07-07-24
This story took me on a roller coaster ride with heavy feminist vibes with a “who dunnit” story while still intertwining romance and the will to do what’s right. History comes alive with a vengeance!

Believable history!
Revisado: 07-21-23
This is a touching story of family, survivors of trauma, and the paths that took them back to their origins. The generations did not forget history but used it to heal. The book’s highlights clearly brought out the social construct of white society that continues to interfere with families, on the margins, especially Women. A message for us all. Not all men in this story were unsupportive and understanding, which was and is the key to partnership and healing. Yes, this is great class material and an example of a strong people who acknowledge and remind us that the land is everyone’s home!! I liked that it wove Creation Care and Racial Justice together!!

Historia
When Aurelie Harcourt's father dies in debtor's prison, he leaves her just two things: his wealthy family, whom she has never met, and his famous pen name, Nathaniel Droll. Her new family greets her with apathy and even resentment. Only the quiet houseguest, Silas Rotherham, welcomes her company. When Aurelie decides to complete her father's unfinished serial novel, she must keep her identity as Nathaniel Droll hidden while searching for the truth about her mother's disappearance - and perhaps even her father's death.

Victorian Flip
Revisado: 12-01-22
I enjoyed this read because it held high to moral and ethics, pealing back layers of colonialism and social constructs, the false relationships it creates, and the people who it really harms. Often times it is those who see through it and morn. The examination of the unjust prison systems continue today. The author was truthful about revealing that not all parents have our best interests. The main character was very lucky to find safe honest love. Not always so lucky for the rest of her family, even though they were taught it is part of the script!
