Historia
Destined for Joy is a collection of essays devoted to the theme of the absolute love of God and the gospel of universal salvation. Written over a period of 10 years and revised for publication in this volume, they represent the fruition of the author’s theological and spiritual development over a span of four decades in parish ministry. If God has truly revealed himself in his incarnate Son Jesus Christ as absolute and unconditional love, does this not mean that he intends the salvation of all?

Accessible and thorough exploration of the history of universal salvation
Revisado: 08-04-24
Well, it took several weeks of listening to finish, but I’m heartily recommend Fr. Kimel’s book! If you’ve ever wondered about Christian universalism, apokatastasis, or the reconciliation of all things, then this is an accessible and exhaustive guide to the history of the idea, the questions and objections often posed, and the thoughtful answers that have been offered in various times and places where the Church has gathered. There’s a LOT of material here that will reward careful study. The appendix with Fr. Kimel’s address given at his son’s funeral is a powerful reminder of real world events where high flying theological rubber meets the road.
The only downside to the Audible is an uneven performance by the reader/narrator. Since the word apokatastasis plays such an important role in the text, it was grating to hear it pronounced hundreds of times with accents on the second and fifth syllables rather than with a single stress on 4th syllable. There are passages from Julian of Norwich that are suddenly read with a strange, singsong inflection and an odd pronunciation that I suspect reflects the orthography of an old (public domain) English printing of her Showings. Finally, a few names could use a little help. It took a while to settle on a pronunciation for (Theodore of) Mopsuestia and (Hans Urs von) Balthasar threw me for a few loops. But these are minor quibbles compared to the great value of Fr. Kimel’s work!
Dig in and savor this beautiful offering ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Historia
Kids today are more gender fluent and expansive than ever before. In America, around two percent of teenagers (over 700,000) openly identify as transgender. As it becomes increasingly common for us to encounter and know transgender kids, as well as kids with more expansive notions of gender than past generations, it is vital that we have the tools we need in order to truly see and support them. Free to Be is an authoritative deep dive by internationally renowned child and adolescent psychiatrist Dr. Jack Turban into the science, medicine, and politics of gender identity.

A clear and sympathetic explanation of gender affirming care for kids in the US
Revisado: 06-29-24
Dr. Jack Turban offers a nuanced and sympathetic look into gender affirming care for young people in the US context. Using composite case studies from his own years of experience, he is able to bring his patients to life as real, three dimensional people rather than just abstractions tossed about in the culture wars. His exploration extends into the science and evidence-based research that informs transgender medical care, talks about the current political climate, and addresses many of the misconceptions repeated in the popular media. This is a great primer for exploring the many aspects of gender affirming medical care and the patients served by it.

If you’re looking for a primer this is it!

There are an increasing of books from folks in the evangelical world who have changed their minds on questions dealing with LGBT people. This book is by far one of the best. The author has assembled a history including the rise of sexual orientation categories in modern psychoanalytic theory, the beginnings of the religious right and its cooperation with conservative political movements, the origins of HIV/AIDS and the ways the disease has been interpreted in religious contexts, reparative therapy and the damage it causes, the phenomenon of mixed orientation marriages, and the history of LGBT Christian people that have held onto Christian faith even as many Christian communities have attempted to shun and push them away. Bringing all the threads together, Baldock paints a detailed picture of how we got here and offers an invitation to those who aren’t satisfied with the historic treatment of LGBT people and want a better way.
The Audible performance is good. Baldock reads her own work. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing her deliver her own words in her own speech patterns. There are a few points where the reading needed to be edited a bit to get rid of a false starts, and one place where I’m pretty sure the written pages she was reading from fell and scattered during the performance, but listeners will understand all the same. These minor quirks do not take away from the breadth of knowledge on offer or the author’s clear exposition.
