This was a good book in the lineup of ‘Death in ….’ National Park. It was well narrated, and carried along facts, information and education.

I like books like this that give an insight in what goes on in National Parks and humans limitations.
This said, what bugged me was the fact when an outsider, as for example a tourist died in the park is was them being ignorant or stupid or not having common sense according to the author. However, if a park ranger or park employee died in Yellowstone it was due to weather or being a freak accident. So very one sided. In the end they all lacked common sense. Employees or not.
No matter how people died in the end, it is sad but much can be learned from each one.

This was a powerful story as history, the guilt, regret and the pain can be a constant companion to all of us. Nothing is ever as black and white as many like to make it seem. It’s complex. The author caught this part very well.

I beyond love this book. It started out a bit slow but the lessons and impact one gets from reading this is timeless. Beautifully written and one could connect even from today’s standards.

Heartbreaking but so true indeed in how horrid women have been treated as second class citizens and still are in this world.

So much of what he tells us rings true to me, the challenge for me will be putting it in action.

I enjoyed this book even thought it would not have been a book I would have chosen to read. It was recommended to me by a friend and I admit it really motivated me to look at life with more joy and purpose.

How inspiring to read about someone with true grit that highlights that there is still good in this world. Challenging? Yes. Sometimes scary and heartbreaking? Yes. But living life to the fullest is the only way and Annie proofed this.

Heartbreaking but a much needed voice about German History

A book and a story that cuts to the heart. A true story from a time and place in Germany that never made it this profoundly into history books, until now.
When the author gives his voice to his mother and her four brothers, four who died fighting in WWII. Their voices come from the letters his mom saved and kept and it is heartbreaking.
However, heartbreak also came to me because as I know this feeling. Show me one German Family that wasn’t impacted by pain and absolute heartbreak handed to them by a murderous state. Slaughtered and killed in a war that was handed out by a maniac who dared to take his own life with arsenic. A true wimp but then that’s what all dictators are.

Anyway. It took me a long time to read this book as I had to take it in slowly. I paused several times and put it down for a day, or two, in between. It made me cry, made my heart hurt, brought back memories of my mom whose beloved father never made it home. To my grandpa who spend years in a Russian Prison Camp.

No, this is not about wanting sympathy. Our pain is our own, to have lost millions and then not ever been able to grieve openly. To swallow the pain while we, citizens, were hated by the world. The men we lost mattered to us, they had our hearts and love and we still carry their memories.

It is easy to get pulled in and read it in one sitting. I admit it is an intriguing story but I also was left with many questions as some of it just didn’t add up.
