It’s not Georgette Hayer or Jane Austin, but it’s light hearted in a little too modern romp style romance novel.

Having never read this author, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was hoping for a Georgette Hayer type Regency Romance. Although, it is in that genre, it is not in the same league.
There is some humor, and a few fun characters; but it isn’t very clever.
The story is romantic and a little more sensual than Heyer or Jane Austin which actually detracted a little from the sweetness and authenticity of the story.
The Duke is more annoying than Rakish, but he has some funny moments. The real hero of the book is Nell, the innocent, sweet young woman who steals his heart. and gives the story its life.

Firstly, I want to praise the wonderful narrator: Justine Eyre!
Her pacing & voice were perfect; and her assortment of accents and voice inflections are the best I’ve heard of the many books on tape I have listened to!

Now to the story. I was at first confused by the thoughts and dialogue of the lead character, Margaret. Her reactions seemed bewildering and overly emotional. Her responses to the two gentleman she meets in the story seem nonsensical and confusing.

However, as the story progresses, some of her reactions and decisions are better explained.
As the plot of the story begins to take shape I enjoyed the book more and more.
As the romance heats up, the author, Leah Garriott shows her greatest strength in expressing emotion the passion of love!
The Story has some very romantic moments!

Overall I gave the book 4 stars because of the romantic, emotional dialogue, and the fantastic narrator!
I will definitely try another one of Miss Garriot’s books!

This is nothing like a Bosch novel!

I’ve read every single Harry Bosch novel and all the Ballard spinoff novels, this is by far the worst Ballard comes across as whiny, narcissistic, and uninteresting; and the great Harry Bosch is now a weak PC version of his former glorious self.
What a complete disappointment! No more chasing, psychopathic killers, corrupt cops, and power mad FBI agents. Now were just chasing those evil “ insurrectionist”Trump supporters.😂

The “Impossible Ward” has a wonderful beginning and plot setup; but unfortunately the bulk of the story gets bogged down in overly descriptive conversations that fail to move the story along.

Other than the satisfying ending, this is not one of Dorothy Mack’s better books. I recommend you try one of her other books; like “The Gangsters Daughter,” if you’re looking for a Georgette Heyer style book.

Regency Buck is a unique blend of Georgette Heyer’s classic Regency Romance Novels & her lesser known Mystery Novels. The story begins with her usual strong willed Beauty vs arrogant aristocratic Rake; but then adds both a gentleman of good morals and a dangerous murder attempt.
The narrator is a gifted voice actress, whos performance of both Lords & Ladies, as well as the “commoners” is excellent!
All in All, one of the best of the Heyer audiobooks!

A Romantic but Annoying Story

The substitute bride is a romantic but rather frustrating story about a young woman who goes to work for a man she has loved since she was a young girl.
although she is at first, a good strong character, who is likable, confident, and wise. There are far too many uninteresting plot shifts, misunderstandings“ and hurt feelings; and the stories heroin becomes rather annoying.
The narrator is much better in this book than in the last Dorothy Mack book I read. Her “male” voice is not great, but she read this story with good emotion and feeling. All in all, there are better Dorothy Mack books than this; including ‘The lost Heir’ and my favorite the ‘Gangsters Daughter.’

This is a fun romantic story with many plot twists and good pacing. The story is endearing and entertaining. The reader has some slightly annoying habits, and her rendition of a man’s voice is not great; but still enjoyable listen for sure!

Sweet but Dull Georgette Heyer Novel

Georgette Heyer novels are usually filled with great humor and romance; but a Civil Contract is thin on both.
The title comes from the stories plot which surrounds a ‘marriage of convenienc,’ and necessity. The hero is a fairly uninteresting But good gentleman who chooses his wife to save his families fortune.
The more interesting character is Jenny, a plan but kind and diligent girl who shines in this story by being what a man needs more than what he wants.
The narrator reads beautifully and gets the most out of a mediocre Novel by the great Georgette Heyer.

I have listened to most of the Georgette Heyer audiobooks, and although this is not her best novel, it is by far the best read performance of any that I’ve heard.
So many of the female readers sound forced trying to do men’s voices, and the male readers sound ridiculous doing the female characters; but the narrator, Matt Addis is exceptional! He really brings every character to life both male and female, Lords, Ladies, and all the “commoners” as well.
Sylvester the Wicked Uncle is well worth the lesson, and I wish every one of her books was read by this excellent voice actor!

A Strange & Playful Novel

I've read almost all of Dean Koontz’s books, but this maybe one of his strangest books yet. Great characters, with odd names and quirky personalities. Funny dialogue, and a truly bizarre plot (or two); reminiscence of ‘Tick Tock,’ ‘Odd Thomas’ & ‘Life Expectancy.’

It’s nice to see Koontz return to his lighter, silly side; after the last run of Dark apocalyptic stories. This book still has its “the world has gone insane’ message; but the humor, Love, and friendships that drive the story, keep it fun and entertaining to the very end!
I must read for Dean Koontz fans, and a welcome return to his joyful storytelling, specially in these dark foreboding times.
