Historia
Joe Allston is a retired literary agent who is, in his own words, "killing time before time gets around to killing me." His parents and his only son are long dead, leaving him with neither ancestors nor descendants, tradition nor ties. His job, trafficking the talent of others, had not been his choice. He passes through life as a spectator. But a postcard from a friend causes him to return to the journals of a trip he had taken years before.

It’s my life Stegner writes about
Revisado: 03-13-22
Great read for someone like myself, now 82. Stegner’s protagonist is younger: nevertheless he is experiencing the relentless aging process and struggles to adjust. Who doesn’t?
A favorite line spoken by a friend of our literary agent: One I’ll never forget:”I don’t feel like an old man. I feel like a young man with something wrong with him.” So true!

Historia
Based on the true story of Alexander Selkirk, who survived alone for almost five years on an uninhabited island off the coast of Chile, The Mysterious Island is considered by many to be Jules Verne’s masterpiece. “Wide-eyed mid-nineteenth-century humanistic optimism in a breezy, blissfully readable translation by Stump” (Kirkus Reviews), here is the enthralling tale of five men and a dog who land in a balloon on a faraway, fantastic island of bewildering goings-on and their struggle to survive....

I shah dearly all of the characters, including the dog and the orang and forever wish that I could follow their amazing lives.
I loved 20,000 Leagues-this is better.

Historia
Life is not easy for the poor relations of England’s upper crust, but fate and clever schemes bring them together. Lady Fortescue and Colonel Sandhurst hatch a plan: What if they were to transform her decrepit Bond Street home into a posh hotel, offering their guests the pleasure of being waited upon by nobility? With the help of other down-and-out aristocrats, they do just that, and London’s newest hotel, The Poor Relation, is born. The establishment is an immediate hit with London’s most illustrious citizens, save the Duke of Rowcester....

Deeper than you might think
Revisado: 07-22-21
One might start reading with the belief that this is a feel-good beach read where everyone lives happily ever after. But the author takes us on an interesting and psychological journey exploring the couples’ issues around adoption and I found myself enjoying and looking forward to discovering what choices the couples eventually make.
I found the ending a bit sappy but hey- there needs to be at least one “awwww golly” moment in a novel like this!

Surprise!
Revisado: 07-22-21
I’d never read Trollope before and was delighted with the plot , the flow and especially the narration.
It reflects the morals of the time and I wonder what different choices may have been made by the major characters today.
I liked it very much. Give it a whirl, the old boy, perforce, might say!

Wonderful
Revisado: 07-01-21
Though a novel., “the Taster” reads as though all true. And probably mostly is. It’s nice to think that our protagonist shoots Hitler at the end and tells him what a wretched human he was, alas, that’s, I believe, fiction. Wish it were true.
