Historia
Blackwater is the saga of a small town, Perdido, Alabama, and Elinor Dammert, the stranger who arrives there under mysterious circumstances on Easter Sunday, 1919. On the surface, Elinor is gracious, charming, anxious to belong in Perdido, and eager to marry Oscar Caskey, the eldest son of Perdido's first family. But her beautiful exterior hides a shocking secret. Beneath the waters of the Perdido River, she turns into something terrifying, a creature whispered about in stories that have chilled the residents of Perdido for generations.

This story was a pointless family history that left me saying “so what” too many times. The horror is underdeveloped, the characters unlikeable, and I kept listening in hopes that it would get better. It didn’t.

Waste of time

The story was average until the end, when it totally bombed.
Too many unexplained character details that were never explored.

Totally pointless
Revisado: 08-21-11
There could have been so many good sub plots developed here- so many themes- but much is left unexplored and under developed. Especially Bertha's situation, Cora's parents' relationship in light of the mother's excesses, etc. Totally boring and essentially trivial. Don't waste a credit or your time.

painfully bad
Revisado: 06-17-10
The narrator has a painfully bad voice. The main character sounds like he's on Valium. Monotone and monotonous. The female voices' falsettos and accents are hysterically bad. The story itself and dialog is awkward and unbelievable. Save your money. I wished I could get a refund after the first 5 minutes. And it just doesn't get better.

Historia
On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

great...til the end
Revisado: 01-14-10
great novel, I couldn't stop listening. The character development was terrific.
BUT, the narrator did terrible accents. Big Jim sounded like a theatrical gay from Alabama. Remy sounded like a Jamaican.
The cause of the dome didn't fit with the rest of the story. I felt like the story kind of fell off the cliff at the end.

painfully dull
Revisado: 03-28-08
I'm a big Rice fan, but this was the most painfully dull book, overly romantic and full of baloney about horses. As one who's grown up on a horse farm, I didn't know weather to laugh of vomit over al the romaticizing and factual errors about horses. And the soppy male lead? Get real!

I could not get past the narrator's lisp and slushy "s"es. It detracted from the story.

Bush's presidency. Once again, Dean employs his distinctive knowledge and understanding of Washington politics and process to examine the conservative movement's current inner circle of radical Republican leaders, from Capitol Hill to Pennsylvania Avenue to K Street and beyond.

overall, interesting read
Revisado: 08-30-06
how the White House is hijacked by right wing conservative Christian fundamentalists with the smug conviction that their attitudes and beliefs are all that matter. Hijacked? Maybe not, maybe the correct idea is that the president as sold the executive branch to this movement. I used to think this president was just a dope, but now I think maybe he's just an astute salesman- he knew he could not prevail by right of his own (lack of) accomplishments, so he figured out how to pander to this smarmy bunch who could deliver him votes.

waste of a credit
Revisado: 08-30-06
Shallow, whiny characters, lengthy passages on essentially nothing, ultimately, who cares? Did the characters ever experience any growth, or introspection, or ANYTHING? No, not really. Scary? No, not at all. When they meet their fate, we just don't care. And to the previous reader, yes, it was the unabridged version, and I read alot too.
