Very basic fairly shallow
Revisado: 10-12-23
An updated version of “How to Win Friends and Influence People”. Filled with “Life hacks” that involve reviewing other people’s research and selling additional website material. I tried to fight through, but gave up with an hour remaining.
If you are looking for personality insight this is not the book for you. If you want to improve how people view you on a shallow level or in business meetings or on your social media profile, you may enjoy this more than I did.

Great story, Worthy of the Film
Revisado: 04-18-23
If you can get past the reader (it is NOT Will Arnett as Lego Batman reading, but it sounds like someone doing their best imitation of that) you will enjoy the novel.
Great story, if you can suspend disbelief in some of the logic and coincidences.
Mann seems to have been influenced very much by James Ellroy in his style. It serves the action well and it is nice to revisit these characters and get to know Chris in a way we didn’t quite get to do in the film.

A perfect novel
Revisado: 06-08-21
I recently listened to this for the first time in 20 years after Larry McMurtry died. I listened to the full series in chronological story order this time- for the first time.
While there are holes in the story continuity between the books, what stands out above all is that this one- Lonesome Dove- the original is by far the best.
The characters, the humor, the tragedy, the love, the hate. The two main characters are so opposite in their approach to life but equally obsessed with living it the way they want as well their commitment to one another.
A perfect story, a perfect Novel. One everyone should read at some point in their life as far as I’m concerned.
The audio book is read well, but imperfectly by Lee Horsley. Some of his choices in characterization can be distracting and frustrating and there were even several times where he read names incorrectly. The production value is also quite poor- honestly, it is the worst of any audio book I have listened to. However, the story itself transcends these imperfections, at least for one listen.

Historia
Two retired Texas Rangers, Captains Woodrow Call and Augustus "Gus" McCrae, lead a cattle drive from the small town of Lonesome Dove to the unsettled Montana territories. On their grueling journey, they are joined by Joshua Deets, a Black scout and former Ranger, Jake Spoon, a fugitive, and Newt Dobbs, a 17-year-old boy who may have family ties to Call. Richly authentic, beautifully written, always dramatic, Lonesome Dove will make listeners laugh and weep, dream and remember.

Trying Way Too Hard
Revisado: 06-22-20
Whil Weston is the perfect narrator. That is the best compliment I can give it. Feels like it is the first draft of a story that begs to be re-written by an editor who tells the author: “Smug. Look it up.”
If you find this review smug and too self congratulatory in its tone please keep in mind that I have been listening to this book for the past hour and this is the result. If you don’t like this review’s tone you will not like the book, either.

You don’t read it for the plot
Revisado: 03-20-20
A lot of the reviews state that the novel is slow. If you are reading it for the plot this may not be the book or the author for you. McCarthy is as much a poet as he is an author. You have to want to enjoy the journey, the language, and use your perception to appreciate the character’s journey. Symbolism, landscape, and even playing with reader’s expectations intentionally. If you can enjoy a painting for an extended period of time you can and will enjoy this book. If you want to just hear or read a nice story with Cowboys this ain’t that book.

Historia
Rob is a pop-music junkie who runs his own semi-failing record store. His girlfriend, Laura, has just left him for the guy upstairs, and Rob is both miserable and relieved. After all, could he have spent his life with someone who has a bad record collection? Rob tries dating a singer, but maybe it’s just that he’s always wanted to sleep with someone who has a record contract. Then he sees Laura again. And Rob begins to think that life with kids, marriage, barbecues, and soft-rock CDs might not be so bad.

Great Book. Gets Better With Age. Like Most Of Us...Hopefully.
Revisado: 02-17-20
I re- visited this book as a 44 year old after reading it years ago as a 30 year old. It not only holds up but has become even better. Either that, or I have. Maybe just a bit of both. Or at least I like to think this.
Yes, there is a movie and yes there is a show and both of them are great in their own right, but this book is fantastic.
The performance captures the wit and English charm well, my only complaint is the habit of making the women’s voices a bit higher and lighter than is necessary- which can be a bit distracting.
Otherwise, this book absolutely is one of my top five, all time, favorite desert island reads.

Historia
In 2017, a routine network television investigation led to a story only whispered about: one of Hollywood’s most powerful producers was a predator, protected by fear, wealth, and a conspiracy of silence. As Farrow drew closer to the truth, shadowy operatives, from high-priced lawyers to elite war-hardened spies, mounted a secret campaign of intimidation, threatening his career, following his every move, and weaponizing an account of abuse in his own family.

Vital information, riveting story, questionable writing choices, childish delivery
Revisado: 01-16-20
The story being told is a fascinating and important one. I thought about it hole listening constantly.
The delivery, written with questionable “dialogue” and too many details can be distracting and too self aggrandizing by the author. This is compounded by the reading. BAD accents, cartoonish voice work/ making it sound as if any person he is performing is being made fun of.
I found the author did himself a disservice by reading it himself as it distracted from the material and actually supported the claims of others in the book that he was more concerned with his own persona than the material.
Some may not be able to get past this and may be better served to get the paper copy. It is vital reading either way.

Author of the National Book Award-winning All the Pretty Horses, Cormac McCarthy is one of the most provocative American stylists to emerge in the last century. The striking novel Blood Meridian offers an unflinching narrative of the brutality that accompanied the push west on the 1850s Texas frontier.

Brutal and Beautiful
Revisado: 12-07-19
Listen or read this book and enjoy the words. Sparse and spare as the words and the plot itself might be, the words used are perfect and beautiful and appalling and occasionally darkly humorous. The Judge is an all time great character of any genre. The Kid a vague protagonist and guide for us as we listen with fear of the next brutal encounter that strong together to form the basis of this journey. McCarthy is an amazing author, who, admittedly, may not be for everyone. This novel is like the flip side of the coin of another great Western Novel: Lonesome Dove. Enjoy the novel for the journey, not for the plot points along the way. As the Judge would tell you: Enjoy the Dance.

Love Carver, But Dietz Ruins It With Reading
Revisado: 05-10-18
Norman Dietz is a fine technical reader but reads with zero cynicism and a seeming lack of understanding of the material. He quite literally made this audiobook intolerable. Like listening to your naive grandfather read James Ellroy to you before bed. Makes you feel awkward.
