Historia
Not only do Southerners talk slowly, but sometimes the whole language is hard to understand. No one realizes that more than Memphis belle Leelee Satterfield. Watching her tackle life and love in Vermont was only the tip of the iceberg when it came to antics, charades, mischief, and romance. Now that she’s back in Memphis, and starting a new relationship with Peter, the Yankee chef from her New England inn, you’d think she’d sit back and enjoy her newly crafted life back home in Dixie. But that just wouldn’t be as much fun.

Boy what a shock when this book started. It was totally terrible. Too bad. The first two books were quite entertaining.

Historia
For the inimitable Lee Smith, place is paramount. For 45 years, her fiction has lived and breathed with the rhythms and people of the Appalachian South. But never before has she written her own story. Set deep in the rugged Appalachian Mountains, the Grundy of Lee Smith's youth was a place of coal miners, mountain music, and her daddy's dimestore. It was in that dimestore - listening to customers and inventing life histories for the store's dolls - that she began to learn the craft of storytelling.

Did not like the narrator.
Revisado: 06-18-18
Though Lee Smith has reached her seventies, she has a wonderful gentile Southern accent that sounds much younger. The narrator sounded like an old lady from New York.

I have loved this series. This one seems so formulaic. It seems like it was written only to meet some contractual agreement.

Historia
Despite all her best efforts to break the cycle of catastrophic, destructive patterns of mental illness, Anna Berry found herself at the end of her rope - unemployed, penniless, homeless, and in the throes of a psychotic episode that threatened to destroy her life. Alone and unwell, she manages to find her grip on life, seeks the help she needs, and embarks on a life and career that illustrate that mental illness does not have to be ruinous.

Shallow presentation
Revisado: 04-25-16
Would you try another book from Anna Berry and/or Anna Berry?
Depends on what it is.
How could the performance have been better?
I realize that Anna Berry deserves to read her own story, but her performance came across as whiny. It was hard to feel much sympathy.
Any additional comments?
The book seemed very superficial and focused basically on how the mental illness in her family impacted her. A better understanding of her mother's story would have helped.

Historia
Bringing the magic and suspense of the All Souls Trilogy to a deeply satisfying conclusion, this highly anticipated finale went straight to number one on the New York Times best seller list. In The Book of Life, Diana and Matthew time-travel back from Elizabethan London to make a dramatic return to the present - facing new crises and old enemies. At Matthew’s ancestral home, Sept-Tours, they reunite with the beloved cast of characters from A Discovery of Witches - with one significant exception.

Historia
Lydia was never the most upstanding of the Bennet sisters, but who ever said that moral rectitude was fun? At least she bested her elder sisters and was the first to get married. She never could understand what all the fuss was about after she left Brighton with her gallant. It is a shame, though, that Mr. Wickham turned out to be a disappointing husband in so many aspects, the most notable being his early demise on the battlefields of Waterloo. And so Lydia, still not yet twenty and full of enterprising spirit, is in urgent need of a wealthy replacement.

Sounded like an older women.
Revisado: 12-02-13
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Like others, I did not find this to be about Austen's Lydia. The character is supposed to be 19, but the narrator sounds like a middle-aged woman. I found this very disconcerting and I just couldn't get past it. Might be a good read, but a terrible book to listen to.

Historia
When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early 40s, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it at first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town's council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.

What disappointed you about The Casual Vacancy?
There is not a single likeable character in this book. It's as if you are reading about the Dursleys and the people in their community. Such a disappointment. I could not even finish it. Not worth the time.
Which scene was your favorite?
None
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Lovely book. Lousy author narration
Revisado: 06-14-12
Would you listen to The Shoemaker's Wife again? Why?
I would read it again, but not listen to it. I love Adriana Trigiani's books. I have read them all, but her narration nearly ruined the book for me.
What other book might you compare The Shoemaker's Wife to and why?
I love all of her books about shoemakers. This is a prequel to her Valentine books.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
There was no reason to change narrators. I have seen that done with other books, but only when it is a different character.
If you could rename The Shoemaker's Wife, what would you call it?
I would not change the name.
