Historia
There’s a new invisible force at work in our economic and cultural lives. It affects every advertisement we see and every product we buy, from our morning coffee to a new pair of shoes. “Stakeholder capitalism” makes rosy promises of a better, more diverse, environmentally friendly world, but in reality, this ideology, championed by America’s business and political leaders, robs us of our money, our voice, and our identity.

Surprisingly good
Revisado: 12-03-21
I not sure what I was expecting, but I got that and much more. The book is a little bit of history, economics, philosophy, morality, and autobiography in a well written book. Unfortunately, with the “great divide” between opposing views today many people will choose not to read it because Vivek Ramaswamy is a self proclaimed conservative and Fox News Contributor. That is a shame because there is a lot of sense in what he says. He loves his family, seems to be an ethical businessman, and is quite logical in his conclusions. I would put him on my list of people I would like to know.

Historia
Born a tanner’s son in rugged Ohio in 1822 and battle-tested by the Mexican-American War, Grant met his destiny on the bloody fields of the Civil War. His daring and resolve as a general gained the attention of President Lincoln, then desperate for bold leadership. Lincoln appointed Grant as Lieutenant General of the Union Army in March 1864. Within a year, Grant’s forces had seized Richmond and forced Robert E. Lee to surrender.

Great book across the board
Revisado: 11-05-21
I thought I knew a lot about Grant, but I had only scratched the surface. Bret Baier made Grant human, not just statistics, but his thoughts, his failures, his love for family, his beliefs and his strict code of conduct. He believed in preserving the union and did everything he could to make that happen. I had no idea how he had a major role in making sure that another civil war would occur during reconstruction. Our country today is eerily reminiscent of the period after the Civil War. Baier is a great writer, brings the subject alive and making you regret the book has to end. I particularly enjoyed that he narrated the book. I am definitely going to read his other books.

Very good
Revisado: 09-18-21
I just discovered The Strike Series and am happy I did. This first book of the series was well written and, for the most part, kept me interested. Instead of a formulaic detective story it handled transition between learning about the main characters and developing the story very well. I was surprised by the conclusion and will definitely read the next book in the series.

Historia
Thirty years ago, Tucker Carlson got his first job out of college fact-checking for a quarterly magazine, and he went on to write for many other publications before becoming the primetime Fox News host he is today. In The Long Slide, Tucker delivers a few of his favorite pieces - annotated with new commentary and insight - to memorialize the tolerance and diversity of thought that the media used to celebrate instead of punish.

Good book
Revisado: 08-23-21
This book is an anthology of articles Tucker Carlson had written during his 30 years career as a journalist. I have considered Carlson an excellent journalist and reading these articles confirmed it. I found his comments before each article very interesting. There are various topics, some political and some general interest. My only complaint is that the book should be longer.

The second volume of Bennett's overview of U.S. history begins with the events leading up to WWI, tracing the progress of the U.S. through the end of Reagan's presidency. Bennett has a long history of government service - he was Secretary of Education under Ronald Reagan and Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy under George H.W. Bush - and the overall tone of the book reflects the deep respect he holds for America's leaders, history and institutions.

Worth reading
Revisado: 05-23-21
In the world of 2021, it is difficult to state an opinion without offending someone. That is a shame because we are missing some great conversations. William Bennett is a conservative so in these polarized times many people would dismiss this book on that basis alone. That is a shame. I think it is a good history. I think it gives a flavor of the times without drowning in the details.
The writing style is excellent. I read Volume I years ago and have had Volume II on my list ever since. I am a baby boomer so the time covered by this book is also the story of my life. My parents and grandparents lived in the earlier years and I found myself wishing I could talk to them about what they saw and felt then. At the same time, the memories of them and my youth came back to me; some good and some not so good. If you want an overview of the politics and events of the 20th century this book is a must read. Jon Gauger did an excellent job with the narration, but I would have loved to hear it read by the author.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Well written. Even better, he narrates his book himself. Vance explains and embraces his hillbilly heritage. More than that, he explores the economics, the psychology and more. I think I will listen again in case I missed something.

Historia
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

Revisado: 01-10-21
Not withstanding that I could listen to Matthew McConaughey read the phone book, this is one of the best books I have ever read. Part memoir, part self help, part advice I found myself marking clips and going back to listen to parts again. I am going to buy the hardback and make it a part of my library. Especially in this year of 2020, with COVID-19, riots, staying at home, and too many righteous people making righteous speeches, this book is hopeful, helpful, and fascinating. Thank you Mr. McConaughey for several hours of good reading.

Historia
One hundred and fifty years ago, Chawton was the final home of Jane Austen, one of England's finest novelists. Now, it's home to a few distant relatives and their diminishing estate. With the last bit of Austen's legacy threatened, a group of disparate individuals come together to preserve both Jane Austen's home and her legacy. These people - a laborer, a young widow, the local doctor, and a movie star, among others - could not be more different and yet they are united in their love for the works and words of Austen.

The narrator was perfect for this book. The story was well written and captivating; a must read for the Jane Austen fan, or anyone else for that matter. I especially enjoyed the conversation with the author after the book was finished.

Thought provoking
Revisado: 11-02-20
It is difficult to express an opinion these days without criticism from every direction. The art of debate has disintegrated into shouting and personal attacks. Statistics and studies are thrown around as gospel. I try to remember this quote from Benjamin Disraeli. “There are three types of lies -- lies, damn lies, and statistics.” My grandfather was a pragmatic man who believed in striving to be moral, charitable, listening to other opinions more than spouting your own, and thinking for yourself. He had strong opinions and beliefs and did not suffer fools, but had respect for others. Well, most others. My grandfather told me to believe half of what you see and none of what you read. I used to think that was a little cynical, but now understand the wisdom. All we can do is try to determine, if we can, what we believe to be right and good while remaining open to the “facts” and opinions. We do not have to believe, nor should we believe, everything we hear or read.
Tucker Carlson is a controversial figure. It seems people love him or consider him a right wing bigot. I enjoy his show which is why I chose to listen to his book, narrated by him. Unlike many other commentators, if you really listen without prejudice, he is not solidly liberal or conservative. He reminds me of my grandfather. He does his share of arguing and is impatient at times, but he also listens. He also has a way of seeing things in a way others miss. I rarely come away from his show without something to think about. This book is the same. I have a lot to think about. I recommend it.

Historia
On a dark, wintry day, Eliza Grey receives a mysterious letter from her ailing Nana Mora begging her to come for a visit. This is an easy "Yes". Eliza has always preferred Nana Mora's beach cottage on St. Simons Island to the apartment she and her mom call home in the city. The island is a magical place where stories and legends grow as thick as the Spanish moss dangling in the trees. Now, Nana Mora's eyesight is fading, and there's something she wants to show Eliza before it’s totally gone: a mythical place locals refer to as Sirens Harbor.
