Historia
In Victorian London, where traveling sideshows are the very pinnacle of entertainment, there is no more coveted ticket than Ashe and Pretorius' Carnivale of Curiosities. Each performance is a limited engagement, and London's elite boldly dare the dangerous streets of Southwark to witness the Carnivale's astounding assemblage of marvels. For a select few, however, the real show begins behind the curtain. Rumors abound that the show’s proprietor, Aurelius Ashe, is more than an average magician. It's said that for the right price, he can make any wish come true.

series declining
Revisado: 01-12-24
they've all been over the top this one just seemed determined to be more over the top and more outrageous than the previous books. the moodiest, broodiest most Bruce- Wayne- ish. and it just comes across as weird sometimes for a story about a bunch of barely adults... I like it but I hate it. all at the same time. you want to know what happens but you're rolling your eyes at half of it as you go along.

Fun Follow Up to Time & Again
Revisado: 10-16-15
This is a really nice follow up to Time & Again. I like that this series seems to be covering just the span of one summer for Abby, Meri, and John. I also enjoy the fact that the series has an over-arching plot about the developing bonds between the main characters, but each book deals with its own self-contained history-mystery. Narrator Michelle Babb does an excellent job. I can tell there is consistency in the way she does the characters that carried over from time and again, and she gives fun personality to the new characters who show up in this book, especially the Old Dears : )
This book is set during the same summer, but the crew goes to house sit for John's cousin, so the story takes place in the same area, but you get new characters and a new setting. I would consider it kind of a cozy mystery, suitable for a wide age range of readers. There is a very sweet developing romance between Abby and John, and both approach the relationship with Christian morals and values. Each character has some points where they talk about having physical feelings and attraction toward one another, but the importance of treating each other with respect, and exercising self-control. The mystery is enjoyable, although not terribly action-packed. Most of solving the mystery revolves around doing a little research and a lot of time surfing in the right places.
I look forward to continuing on in the series, and seeing how the characters continue to bond together. And, based on the last few lines of the book, what mystery they get into next!

Historia
Abby Thomas is spending the summer in a run-down old house with a bratty pre-teen named Merrideth she is supposed to tutor. Not a dream job. But it does come with perks. There's John Roberts, a devastatingly attractive neighbor who is almost too wonderful to be real. And there's the new computer program Beautiful Houses - also too amazing to be real. No one knows how it works, but with it she can rewind and fast-forward the lives of all the people who ever lived in the house, including Charlotte Miles.

Delightful Story
Revisado: 09-15-15
This is a really nice story. I'd characterize it as young adult Christian fiction. The story is about Abbie, a college girl working with a summer tutoring program. She's assigned to Meredith, in a middle-of-nowhere town in an old fixer-upper house. Abbie goes in with the intention of catching Meredith up on her school work, and maybe trying to improve her social skills a bit. But over the course of the summer, Abbie and Meredith both find out they have much to learn not only from each other, but from the history of the old house. Meredith learns some very valuable lessons, and she and Abbie make some new friends that seem like they will carry over into the rest of the series. I loved the characters, and found myself invested in whether Meredith would make some changes in her life. I also liked the supporting characters of Michael and John.
The writing was nicely done, the history well-researched, and the narrator also does a great job. Michelle Bab (the narrator) is good at differentiating between characters as they converse with each other. I would definitely check out more of the History Mystery series.

Historia
In 1934, the body of a beautiful, but poor young woman was found alongside a riverbank near The Depot. Beaten to a pulp, only recognizable by a tattoo on her ankle, and yet, days after the discovery, the story all but disappears. Eighty years later, locals claim The Depot is haunted. But in all the years homicide detective Mark Waters has visited the abandoned1800s train station turned restaurant, he's never seen proof. Until now.

More Soap Opera Than Mystery
Revisado: 08-17-15
Would you try another book from Carmen DeSousa and/or Michelle Babb?
I probably would not try another book from Carmen DeSousa. The story is too passive, and filled with too much internal personal dialogue of the main character about stuff that has nothing to do with the murder mystery. I would listen to other books narrated by Michelle Babb. The narration was fine.
Would you ever listen to anything by Carmen DeSousa again?
I probably would not listen to any more of Carmen DeSousa's books. Apparently her writing is just not my style. It's too much drama and soap opera and not enough focus on the mystery part of the plot.
Have you listened to any of Michelle Babb’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
This is the first Michelle Babb performance I've listened to. I wouldn't mind listening to her again.
What character would you cut from The Library: Where Life Checks Out?
The characters are all ok, the writer just needs to work on more active writing. There is too much time spent on the characters internal thoughts particularly the love interest in the book, and not enough focus on the actual plot points of the mystery. It has a good premise, it has potential to be a really good story.
