Promising beginning
Revisado: 09-05-24
It took about 8 chapters to identify the protagonists and how their world was changing. After that, following the plot was fairly easy, even though my brain kept searching for something in common with our world, or at least with "The Expanse" At the beginning of the end, in chapter 34, I finally caught a glimpse of something that could be, and at the end of the beginning, I can see that there will be exciting books to come...

No explanation?
Revisado: 07-24-24
It may have been me that was too tired, but I waited through three books to find out why the name "Delphi" had been chosen for prominence, especially given that the Delphi, Indiana double homicide from February 2017 is going through the preliminaries of the court case these days.

I will have to check if all the titles were woven in, but Jody being her brilliant and hilarious self, I dare to place they are all included and has a couple of add-ons!
Markham's storytelling is always highly entertaining, and this is no exception, so just buy it, already!

Heard about a gift on a bed?
Revisado: 09-13-23
I guffawed when I Heard the proof that Jodi had watched the court case along with the rest of the world last year, although she didn't call the thing on the bed a "grumpy"!
This book series is the most enjoyable one I know of, and re-listening always allows me to catch things that passed me by the first time around. It is my sincere hop that Jodi keeps writing forever, and that the editors will have the guts to prevent a fall like that of Diana Gabaldon (who manages to kill all my joy over her book series with the last, very bland book where all the characters had received a lobotomy)!

Historia
Beartown is a small town in a large Swedish forest. For most of the year it is under a thick blanket of snow, experiencing the kind of cold and dark that brings people closer together - or pulls them apart. Its isolation means that Beartown has been slowly shrinking with each passing year. But now the town is on the verge of an astonishing revival. A bright new future is just around the corner. Until the day it is all put in jeopardy by a single, brutal act. It divides the town into those who think it should be hushed up and forgotten, and those who'll risk the future to see justice done.

Gripping, full of drama, emotion and compassion
Revisado: 11-12-22
Fredrik Backman is an exceptional writer that always manages to heve me as a reader a real relationship with the complex and developing characters. For someone who never cared for hockey at all and grew up on the wrong side of small town group dynamics, it was a tough pill to swallow when I came to love characters that live and breathe such stuff in all its horror.
The glimpses into different characters experiencing the same or subsequent time periods became so short towards the end that it was hard to keep track and make my brain jump to the appropriate setting. This is probably much less of a challenge in print than in audiobook format , and might be correlated to my lack of sleep by the time I wrapped up the book, so I just resign myself to having to return to understand exactly what happened to especially Benji.

Is the cliche story or the narrator worse?
Revisado: 10-21-22
I wish I had spotted the name MichayKramer before buying the book, as he has ruined many a good book for me by his harsh interpretations, lazy pronunciation of names and odd stressing of sentences!
But I did give the story a chance to win me over. Sure, the confused protagonist sounded way too confused and naive, but it was the calling out "Illeana, my wife" that convinced me that the writer of this book series is severely lacking in storytelling technique. Who hs ever called their spouse repeatedly with the added "my love" or "my wife", instead of with a short nickname or just simply their name? Are you underestimating your readers so much that you don't trust them to understand that the woman he avoids stepping on is is dead wife without telling us over and over and over again that is the case?
The arrival of the antagonist on the scene is also so over the top evil villain prototype that even the stupidest reader would understand what the name alludes to. I already read the bible and don't need a reimagined version, thank you, can't you think up something more imaginative than the same old story? I know that fantasy stories in general tend to follow the trope of good hero vs evil villain, but there are ways to use the trope in ways that at least plot the characters in different bodies than two males of more or less equal stature and power.
JK Rowling managed it, even though Tolkien had ruled the roost for decades. NK Jemisin did it with applomb with her Broken Earth trilogy only a few years ago!
I much prefer returning to well written and read books instead of this mulch, ni matter how popular the TV series (let's face it, it's all about the costumes and accessories on sexy people, anyway...).

A worthy ending
Revisado: 12-04-21
I am incredibly relieved to have found the entire book gripping, scientifically exciting and at the same time huge and microscopic. That much could probably have been predicted, and while listening I found myself understanding the larger issues and what had to happen. But the authors still managed to surprise and overwhelm me, even while half my brain was thinking: "Of course! That had to be done, and it could not have been done by anyone else, the first foreshadowing happened many books ago!"
It is actually quite impressive that all the treads could be sorted out and tied off neatly, yet the book contains so much emotion and humanity. My favorite part must be how every single character evolved, became slightly better versions of themselves, but still remained recognizable and lovably flawed. No rose tinted glasses, but no nihilistic cynicism, either, just a recognition and acceptance of all we are.
The last part of this review must be an expression of gratitude for the epilogue, which left me with so much to think about while smiling a little!
