Historia
In Navola, a city-state dominated by a handful of influential families, business is power, and power is everything. For generations, the di Regulai family—merchant bankers with a vast empire—has nurtured tendrils that stretch to the farthest reaches of the known world. And though they claim not to be political, their wealth has bought cities and toppled kingdoms. Soon, Davico di Regulai will be expected to take the reins of power from his father and demonstrate his mastery of the games of Navolese diplomacy. But in Navola, strange and ancient undercurrents lurk behind the gilt and grandeur.

Scintillating, brilliant story with excellent narration
Revisado: 01-16-25
I’m left wanting more! An unusual tale with a first person narrator delightfully lacking in self-awareness. The setting and world building evokes renaissance Italy, which is pleasantly different from the usual fantasy. The intrigues in the story are gripping and many are unfulfilled (in the best possible way). I hope there’s a book 2 on the way!

Fantasy trying to masquerade as science
Revisado: 07-21-24
Initially I thought this was a piece of historical fiction in the vein of Jules Verne, but soon realised the author is genuinely taking himself seriously. That was amusing for a while, but after he started heading down a numerology path it became tedious.
It’s also rather racist at times, given one of his main premises is that “primitive jungle Indians” (ie the Mayan civilisation) couldn’t possibly have a detailed understanding of the heavens and amazing architecture, and therefore must have had the help and guidance of a race of white people, of whom there is no archaeological evidence.
I think it would be worth the author reading the Wikipedia article about “confirmation bias”. It might open his mind… but then again some people already have minds so open their brains have fallen out.

Historia
The Reaper is a legend, more myth than man: the savior of worlds, the leader of the Rising, the breaker of chains. But the Reaper is also Darrow, born of the red soil of Mars: a husband, a father, a friend. The worlds once needed the Reaper. But now they need Darrow. Because after the dark age will come a new age: of light, of victory, of hope.

Possibly my favourite book of the series so far. TGR does a much better job of narrating all the different characters than the varied narrators of the last two books. I’m looking forward to Red God!

Historia
Ten years after the events of Morning Star, Darrow and the Rising are battling the remaining Gold loyalist forces and are closer than ever to abolishing the color-coded caste system of Society for good. But new foes will emerge from the shadows to threaten the imperfect victory Darrow and his friends have earned. Pierce Brown expands the size and scope of his impressive Red Rising universe with new characters, enemies, and conflicts among the stars.

This is a great continuation of the saga, somewhat let down by an odd choice of narrators
Revisado: 11-26-23
Darrow’s narrator repeatedly calls Sevro “servo”, Lira’s narrator mangles accents and is quite grating, Ephron’s narrator inexplicably gives random characters a periodic Scandinavian accent (Volga is intentional, others intermittent), and Lysander’s narrator rushes through the part like the rent is due and he won’t be paid until he finishes.
The underlying story is great, I just wish there was more attention paid to the recording/performances.

Darrow would have lived in peace, but his enemies brought him war. The Gold overlords demanded his obedience, hanged his wife, and enslaved his people. But Darrow is determined to fight back. Risking everything to transform himself and breach Gold society, Darrow has battled to survive the cutthroat rivalries that breed Society's mightiest warriors, climbed the ranks, and waited patiently to unleash the revolution that will tear the hierarchy apart from within.

Oxford, 1836. The city of dreaming spires. It is the centre of all knowledge and progress in the world. And at its centre is Babel, the Royal Institute of Translation. The tower from which all the power of the Empire flows. Orphaned in Canton and brought to England by a mysterious guardian, Babel seemed like paradise to Robin Swift. Until it became a prison. But can a student stand against an empire?

Expected better; a plot full of holes and choppy narration
Revisado: 12-03-22
I listened to the whole book but couldn’t wait for it to be over.
There’s an issue with the narration, where the narrator has mispronounced things and they’ve patched in another take to fix them, but not matched the microphone/recording so words here and there stick out like a sore thumb.
Then there’s the book itself. It’s very virtue-signally and preachy, with one-dimensional characters and a plot so full of holes it could be used as a jacket for a millipede. I was really looking forward to this book, and was really surprised by how poorly it was constructed.
I recommend saving the credit and using it on something better.

Historia
Danny North is the first Gate Mage to be born on Earth in nearly 2,000 years, or at least the first to survive and claim his power, for families of Westil in exile on Earth have a treaty that requires the death of any suspected Gate Mage. The wars between the families had been terrible until at last they realized it was their own survival in question. But a Gate Mage, one who could build a Great Gate back to Westil, would give his own family a terrible advantage over all the others and reignite the wars. So it was decided that they all had to die.

A bit of a disappointment after the first two books
Revisado: 04-14-21
The other 3 books in the mithermages series are some of Scott Cards’s best works. This book, however, felt like a mad dash to elucidate the underlying philosophy and metaphysics of the world of the mithermages. The story itself suffered. The other books presented an interesting underlying concept in the form of a page-turning narrative, whereas this felt more like reading Ayn Rand. Superficially, there was a narrative, but chapter after chapter were just dialogue explaining concepts. Verisimilitude was also sacrificed in the name of continuing explanations; the story moves to 2 new characters who continue essentially the same conversation, despite the fact that there is no way that one party could have known enough to hold the conversation.
All in all, this was a disappointing end to the trilogy, but if you’ve listened to the first two then it’s likely you’ll want to listen to this anyway to complete the story.
