Horrible narration!

Love Luke and Ed! Narrating is always the problem in audio books. Seems to be only one good narrator for every five good books! Narrates disinterested!

Historia
Shrill is an uproarious memoir, a feminist rallying cry in a world that thinks gender politics are tedious and that women, especially feminists, can't be funny. Coming of age in a culture that demands women be as small, quiet, and compliant as possible - like a porcelain dove that will also have sex with you - writer and humorist Lindy West quickly discovered that she was anything but. With inimitable good humor, vulnerability, and boundless charm, Lindy boldly shares how to survive in a world where not all stories are created equal.

Didn't realize I'd been waiting for this book.
Revisado: 08-06-18
I read this after I read Hunger by Roxane Gay, and it was a terrific pairing. While similarly mixing memoir and culture critique related to women's bodily experiences, in a way these books couldn't be more different.
West knows how to travel back in forth between self-reflection and social criticism so gracefully, and her judicious uses of (laugh out loud) humor, argument, storytelling, and confession are masterfully integrated.
Good memoir that also contains precise documentation of a historical moment is hard to come by. I am so glad to have found this book, which sets a shining example for others working in this genre.

Historia
If your funny older sister were the former deputy chief of staff to President Barack Obama, her behind-the-scenes political memoir would sound something like this. Who Thought This Was a Good Idea? is an intimate and admiring portrait of a president, a candid book of advice for young women, and a promising debut from a savvy political star.

Needs a professional narrator
Revisado: 05-10-18
So sorry, Alyssa, but your narration does not showcase the strengths of your story adequately. I would have read all they way through if I’d bought paper, but I cannot do 5+ hours of your untrained reading style. I wish someone had steered you away from this (unfortunately common) mistake.

Historia
Tooly Zylberberg, the American owner of an isolated bookshop in the Welsh countryside, conducts a life full of reading, but with few human beings. Books are safer than people, who might ask awkward questions about her life. She prefers never to mention the strange events of her youth, which mystify and worry her still. Taken from home as a girl, Tooly found herself spirited away by a group of seductive outsiders, implicated in capers from Asia to Europe to the United States. But who were her abductors? Why did they take her? What did they really want?

Wonderful book. Superb narration.
Revisado: 08-10-14
If you could sum up The Rise & Fall of Great Powers in three words, what would they be?
Fresh but timeless.
What did you like best about this story?
Memorable characters; unusual settings.
Have you listened to any of Penelope Rawlins’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I've never heard this narrator before, but she made the story very real to me.
Any additional comments?
If you're still mourning the end of The Goldfinch, this isn't a bad follow up.

From the internationally best-selling author of The History of Love comes this stunning novel. Great House follows the multiple owners of one writing desk and how the desk shapes their lives. A young novelist inherited the desk from a poet taken by Pinochet’s police. Then the desk is stolen from her by the poet’s supposed daughter. In its drawers, another man discovers a long-kept secret about his wife....

Weirdly narrated.
Revisado: 10-18-13
What did you like best about Great House? What did you like least?
I think I would have liked this book more if the narration hadn't been so oddly directed. The women narrators were both like public radio announcers, completely without inflection or personality. I don't understand those choices at all. The men were much better, with the possible exception of Weiss at the end... again, very flat.
What gives?
