Narration not as compelling
Revisado: 05-02-25
Vicki Delany is a wonderful author. Her descriptions evoke clear characters and her plot lines work. I especially like Lilly Roberts because she is NOT trying to investigate and it is believable that she would mind her own business, if not for a bossy and presumptuous grandmother. I wish the series had maintained the original narrator whose inflections and different characters were supportive of the excellent writing. This narrator should just read the story in her own voice, attempting characters distracts from the plot.

Historia
From the earliest days of civilization, alcohol has been at the center of social rituals and cultures worldwide. But when exactly did drinking become a gendered act? And why have bars long been considered "places for men" when, without women, they might not even exist? With whip-smart insight and boundless curiosity, Girly Drinks unveils an entire untold history of the female distillers, drinkers and brewers who have played a vital role in the creation and consumption of alcohol, from ancient Sumerian beer goddess Ninkasi to iconic 1920s bartender Ada Coleman.

Do Not Get This Book....

Unless you have no intention of returning it. The history appears thorough. The narration is okay. The focus is not for me.
Audible lacks customer service. And their help information contains spelling errors and is outdated for most browsers.
I've been a member over 5 years and they've made it more and more difficult to choose books I might like.

This author makes an excellent story with gratuitous sex or foul language or unnecessary innuendo. Very intelligent and intellectually satisfying.

If you need explicit sexual descriptions… chapter 14
Revisado: 09-15-24
I liked the storyline, the science, the characters-all of it. Until the author depicted the sexual encounter in detail. Not my taste. Wish other reviewers had issued a warning!

Gotta love history…
Revisado: 06-07-23
The character development appeals to anyone who appreciates “meeting” the book’s “staff”. Didn’t care for the narrator’s attempt at female American inflection-needed a higher pitch instead of sounding like a male American. That’s the only reason for 4 stars under performance. Looking forward to continuing with the series. (Am a Lady Hardcastle and Flo fan!)

Historia
Retired publisher Susan Ryeland is living the good life. She is running a small hotel on a Greek island with her long-term boyfriend Andreas. It should be everything she's always wanted. But is it? She's exhausted with the responsibilities of making everything work on an island where nothing ever does, and truth be told, she's beginning to miss London. And then the Trehearnes come to stay. The strange story they tell about an unfortunate murder that took place on the same day and in the same hotel in which their daughter was married fascinates Susan and piques her editor's instincts.

Historia
Erin Coleridge's used bookstore in Kirkbymoorside, North Yorkshire, England, is a meeting place for the villagers and, in particular, for the local Jane Austen Society. At the Society's monthly meeting, matters come to a head between the old guard and its young turks. After the meeting breaks for tea, persuasion gives way to murder with extreme prejudice when president Sylvia Pemberthy falls dead to the floor. Poisoned? Presumably, but by whom? And was Sylvia the only target?

Very fun cozy mystery
Revisado: 09-06-20
I enjoy mysteries that engage without over sensationalizing or sex. That element is for a different genre.
This ticked all the boxes of suspense, empathy, good and strong feminine characters with friendship at the center. Yes. Well done. The only challenge is the narrators substantial increase in volume when giving voice to a character. It required frequent adjustment of the volume on my older device.

Well written
Revisado: 09-10-19
I often look to junior high stories for a nice adventure with out the often gratuitous “romance” element that detracts from the character development and believability of a mystery. This semi-fantasy did not disappoint. As the parent of two musicians it spoke to my experiences of raising gifted children, but from the child’s perspective. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to investigate what it’s like to have a young performing artist’s soul and drive.

This is one of my favorite series. The authors provide believable, maturing characters without the cheesy romantic nonsense and regular lying that is so frustrating in other mystery series. And narration by Neil Dudgeon makes a perfect compliment for us Midsomer Murders watchers.

Had Jane Austen lived to complete Sanditon, it would have been as treasured as her other novels. In the half-finished masterpiece, Austen fashions one of her classic heroines: Charlotte Heywood. The surviving fragment also sets the story well on its path as Charlotte begins an adventure to Sanditon where a full cast of characters becomes intertwined in various intrigues.

Thought it was the book from Marie Dobbs
Revisado: 06-27-18
Having read the 1975 version of Sanditon by Marie Dobbs, I was looking forward to that story and found this one imaginative but disappointing in comparison. Charlotte is the point of the first 11 chapters that Jane Austen crafted and to have her story concluded well prior to the story end was less than satisfying.
