Historia
When Aline Griffith was born in a quiet suburban New York hamlet, no one had any idea that she would go on to live “a life of glamour and danger that Ingrid Bergman only played at in Notorious” (Time). As the United States enters the Second World War, the young college graduate is desperate to aid in the war effort, but no one is interested in a bright-eyed young woman whose only career experience is modeling clothes.

Fascinating glimpse into WWII espionage

I love how multiple sources were used to pull together a story that was quite engaging as we learn about Aline Griffith. The epilogue was a special touch.

Story of emotion and thoughtfulness
Revisado: 04-18-24
The audio performance was superb. The story captured me immediately and I loved the characters, flaws and all. The character development was amazing and they felt like real people living during such a tragic time of history. The story packs a punch of emotion and leaves you pondering life at the end and sadness at saying goodbye to these people.

The audio performance was of course amazing. I knew there would be a twist and I really thought I had it figured out. I did not and that made me love the book for not being predictable.

Historia
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

Powerful story of strong women
Revisado: 08-23-23
Books on WWII are difficult to read due to the magnitude of evil and loss. The stories are important to remember the heroes and the actions to hopefully prevent history repeating itself. The book had me captured from the beginning and sobbing at the end. I do recommend this book and the narrator performs it very well.

A dark segment of history
Revisado: 02-08-23
This book is written in such a way that you develop attachment to characters as you learn about another dark truth of Nazi practices. It is a very well written book, but difficult to read due to the emotions that are stirred. I feel we are obligated to learn history to hopefully prevent repeating it. Historical fiction is a method that allows the reader to develop relationships with the characters while learning about a particular place and time. This author did this very well and the author’s note at the end is just as telling.

Lina Meisel, a retired librarian in Florida, is reading the newspaper one morning when she freezes. Her eyes lock on a photograph of a book she hasn’t seen in 65 years - a book she recognizes as The Book of Lost Names. The accompanying article discusses the looting of libraries by the Nazis across Europe during World War II - an experience Lina remembers well - and the search to reunite people with the texts stolen from them so long ago. The book in the photograph is one of the most fascinating cases.

A love story
Revisado: 01-06-23
So much about this book to love as your heart breaks and anger is flared. The history of WWII is so difficult, especially when you read historical fiction that lets you feel some of the emotions experienced by those most affected by the war. A well written book that is hard to put down and leaves you missing its characters once you turn the final page.
