Historia
A stevedore on the San Francisco docks in the 1940s, Eric Hoffer wrote philosophical treatises in his spare time while living in the railroad yards. The True Believer—the first and most famous of his books—was made into a bestseller when President Eisenhower cited it during one of the earliest television press conferences.

Evergreen
Revisado: 08-14-24
Short and packed full of information on human nature that will always remain salient. Great vibe check on the early cold-war from someone deep in the mix.

Historia
Dostoevsky's life was marked by brilliance and brutality. Sentenced to death as a young revolutionary, he survived mock execution and Siberian exile to live through a time of seismic change in Russia, eventually being accepted into the Tsar's inner circle. Somehow, amidst all this, he found time to write short stories, journalism, and novels. In Dostoevsky in Love, Alex Christofi weaves carefully chosen excerpts of the author's work with the historical context to form an illuminating and often surprising whole.

The rawness
Revisado: 07-21-24
This is a beautiful book, and I now despise everyone a little more, yet, I am also somehow filled with more hope.
"The novel is rather boring and so-so, I don't understand what they're so excited about."

Historia
If you asked most people what forces led to today’s unprecedented income inequality and financial crashes, no one would say the Federal Reserve. For most of its history, the Fed has enjoyed the fawning adoration of the press. When the economy grew, it was credited to the Fed. When the economy imploded in 2008, the Fed got credit for rescuing us.

complex topics made understandable
Revisado: 01-15-22
all excellent explanation of topics such as the repo market. he shows the appropriate amount of sympathy for central bankers who are given difficult choices, as well as criticism for their choices which disproportionately benefit the rich.

Not true... but it works
Revisado: 06-02-20
If you are the type of person who CAN be convinced that there is such a thing as “Love languages”, or that there are exactly five, which fit into perfect categories, then this book will be very helpful to you.
But even if you aren’t the type of person who believes that complex interpersonal human relations can be neatly summed up in a Buzzfeedesque listicle, this book can still be helpful.
Put more effort into showing love to those around you. And do it in a way that the target of your love understands.
