Historia
Newlyweds Celestial and Roy are the embodiment of both the American Dream and the New South. He is a young executive, and she is an artist on the brink of an exciting career. But as they settle into the routine of their life together, they are ripped apart by circumstances neither could have imagined. Roy is arrested and sentenced to 12 years for a crime Celestial knows he didn't commit. Though fiercely independent, Celestial finds herself bereft and unmoored, taking comfort in Andre, her childhood friend, and best man at their wedding.

Couldn’t get beyond the narrator’s voice
Revisado: 08-15-20
Narrator’s voice when reading Celestial’s part made her sound feeble and reminded me of a bleating goat. And when reading Roy’s part, he has a slight vocal fry —It was awful couldn’t finish the book.

Historia
In The Signature of All Things, Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction, inserting her inimitable voice into an enthralling story of love, adventure and discovery. Spanning much of the 18th and 19th centuries, the novel follows the fortunes of the extraordinary Whittaker family as led by the enterprising Henry Whittaker - a poor-born Englishman who makes a great fortune in the South American quinine trade, eventually becoming the richest man in Philadelphia.

What is this book about?
Revisado: 04-24-20
I only made it to chapter 4 and I caught myself thinking for the third time, “What’s this book about again?” It drones on with details on the details about the details and I just can’t take or anymore.
I enjoy Elizabeth Gilbert’s writing style and I LOVED City of Girls, Big Magic and Eat, Pray, Love so I thought this book would be no different. Unfortunately that’s not the case.

Historia
In December 2000, the Baltimore Sun ran a small piece about Wes Moore, a local student who had just received a Rhodes Scholarship. The same paper also ran a series of articles about four young men who had allegedly killed a police officer in a spectacularly botched armed robbery. The police were still hunting for two of the suspects who had gone on the lam, a pair of brothers. One was named Wes Moore.

Great listen
Revisado: 03-09-20
I give this book five stars. My wife recommended I read this book or listen to it.
This book relates to me in great detail. Being from the inner city in a one parent house hold trying to navigate thru life as a black male. Being one bad decision away from death, jail or complete embarrassment. This book explains choices and hope and helping each other. I will say this to all never give up on yourself. Keep fighting until you can’t fight anymore. We are built for the road ahead.

Historia
Stable, safe, predictable—all words that aptly describe Professor Nadia Day’s life. An existence she’s carefully crafted for herself despite her unconventional upbringing and what, to her, is an unseemly past. The last thing she would ever do is rock the boat when it comes to her life and livelihood. When retired football player and single dad, Nathan Moore, walks into her psychology classroom, all fine and dreadlocked, he does more than rock her boat—he rocks her world and causes her to question her buttoned-up existence.

Historia
Beloved author Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction with a unique love story set in the New York City theater world during the 1940s. Told from the perspective of an older woman as she looks back on her youth with both pleasure and regret (but mostly pleasure), City of Girls explores themes of female sexuality and promiscuity, as well as the idiosyncrasies of true love. In 1940, nineteen-year-old Vivian Morris has just been kicked out of Vassar College, owing to her lackluster freshman-year performance.

I liked it.
Revisado: 08-24-19
I laughed and cried. Beautifully written with great structure—was a little dicey for the first hour or so but I hung in there and I’m glad it was interesting enough to stick with as my “vacation read”. It turned out to be a charming story of an old woman recounting her coming of age as an unconventional albeit naive teenager in 1940s New York City.
The narrator was probably the best I’ve heard thus far in my years as an audible member. Great tone and inflection without over-acting the dialogue.

Im returning this book—I gave it a good two hours but I cant take it anymore. Half the time I didnt know what the heck was going on because the book couldn’t hold my attention—the narrator was a little unenthused but not TOO bad.

I liked this story however, I couldn't get past the robotic and almost monotone voice of the narrator.

Hmmm
Revisado: 04-19-17
I liked this story but I didn't at the same time.
I appreciate the development of the main characters and their relationships to one another. I also appreciate the historical references to a time in which I'd heard very little about and it offered an idea of what life during that time MAY have been like. Then there's the story overall: sections of the story that didn't add any real value to the story were terribly drawn out and seemed as if they'd never end and I found myself becoming bored.
I also found myself confused by the time jumps in regards to "Baby" and that whole "situation" and thought maybe I'd missed something somewhere. I wound up searching through chapters for over 30 minutes to figure out what the hell I'd missed only yo discover I hadn't missed anything at all.
I loved the narrating though as she really put effort into "performing" the book and making clear distinctions between characters.
This book could have easily been 4 hours shorter by cutting out the fillers.

Historia
Why exactly Charley Bordelon's late father left her eight hundred sprawling acres of sugarcane land in rural Louisiana is as mysterious as it was generous. Recognizing this as a chance to start over, Charley and her 11-year-old daughter, Micah, say good-bye to Los Angeles. They arrive just in time for growing season but no amount of planning can prepare Charley for a Louisiana that's mired in the past: as her judgmental but big-hearted grandmother tells her, cane farming is always going to be a white man's business.

Good enough to pass the time

The book could have been improved by omitting some content that seemed to be nothing more than filler.
Other than that, I enjoyed the book as a simple passtime.
