I agree with the other positive reviews of this book, but I feel compelled to point out that these extraordinary times we live in call on us to confront evil in the outside world as well as within ourselves. It's not enough to just endlessly self-reflect and self-correct; this way of thinking is rooted in the "cult of personal responsibility" that infects our culture at present, i.e. the erroneous (and very North American) notion that if we just work on ourselves hard enough, everything else will fall into place. It won't. We have to take action in the real world as well: call out lies, hold our elected officials to account, stand up to hate, etc. The advice in this book speaks more to preparing one's inner ground -- which we sorely need -- but it's only the first half of the equation in the quest to confront evil.

There is no other book quite like The Wild Edge of Sorrow. Rather than being another "how to" or grieve-by-numbers manual, this work explores the vast terrain of grief, loss, and sorrow as an essential part of the human experience. The crown jewel is the chapter on the Five Gates of Grief, which are not stages of grief but rather the five primary doors through which we encounter grief and sorrow in our lives, most of which are not well understood or even acknowledged in our culture. This is a work of great depth, compassion, and insight, and I suspect it will be the catalyst for much inner work among its readers. Highly recommended for anyone who has struggled with a sense of sorrow/loss (of any kind) and is seeking psychological and/or spiritual healing.

Margaret Wheatley is widely known as an author/teacher in the field of leadership and service, which I suspect somewhat limits her readership. This is unfortunate, because Wheatley's recent books So Far From Home (2012) and Who Do We Choose to Be? (2017) are both outstanding resources for anyone seeking to restore balance and sanity to their worldview in this soul-destroying era we're now living through. Two points of advice: 1) read So Far From Home first, as it lays the essential groundwork for everything Wheatley discusses here, and 2) do heed her request to get a hard copy of this book; it contains a lot of extras (footnotes, suggested reading, quotes, poems, photos) and is great to have on hand for reference, reflection, or just a brief sanity break when you need it.

No doubt, this is a difficult, sometimes frustrating listen. Zuboff's writing style is challenging, to say the least. But the information contained within is so incredibly potent and valuable, I'd say it's one of the most important (if not *the* most important) book of the last 50 years. Think "Silent Spring" for the tech industry, with our human future hanging in the balance. Fans of/apologists for Google, Facebook, and Big Tech in general will not like what they read, but screw 'em; they've been lying to us for decades. Please listen to this to understand the truth of our situation.

Hands down, one of the best books on spirituality I've ever listened to/read. So profoundly wise and helpful, I have two hard copies in addition to the audio. I hate to write vague reviews, but there really are no words to describe the value of this book. If you are struggling -- with anything in your life -- there's something here for you. I've read it several times and use it like an oracle (turn to a page at random for guidance)...I've never been disappointed. If I could only have one book to help me navigate the dark passages of life, this would absolutely be the one.

This book's title and the description are not truly reflective of the content. I was expecting a book that discussed, in depth, the digital underpinnings of the increasing toxification of US politics and culture. Instead, what's presented is a blow-by-blow timeline of the major dramas and traumas of the disastrous Trump presidency peppered with random Tweets, Facebook posts, and other social media quotes. (Worse, these artifacts are all given equal weight, whether it's an official government Tweet or some random nobody posting on Facebook, which I found extremely bizarre.) I don't disagree with any of the analysis the author provides -- we're politically on the same page -- but this isn't the content I was expecting.

Also, the narrator is truly awful. He reads (or, rather, acts out) the book like a left-wing version of Rush Limbaugh -- literally on the verge of shouting much of the time -- and worse, attempts a different "character" for each quote, most of which come off as mocking or otherwise over-the-top. Not a good choice for the thoughtful listener and does a real disservice to the author.

This book is nearly as good as "How to Be Sick", though with slightly fewer Buddhist references and a bit more of a generalist approach and emphasis on practical advice. (Not that the first book was lacking in that department!) I'd definitely recommend you read How to Be Sick first (it's more than worth the time/credit), then move on to this book, which kind of fills in the blanks and serves as a good refresher for the core practices taught/discussed in the first book. Once again, Deon Vozov does an absolutely wonderful job with the narration.

Essential read for anyone sick/in pain

...and quite a good general introduction to Buddhist thought as well. Tons of helpful practices and practical advice to help people living with sickness/pain deal with just about every aspect of chronic illness you can imagine. I honestly feel like I could work with the material in this book (and Bernhard's two other titles) for the rest of my life.

Besides the practices/advice, perhaps the greatest blessing this book has to offer is its convincing reassurances that 1) you're truly not alone in your suffering and 2) despite what our culture says, being sick/in pain doesn't mean you did something wrong; you're just sick/in pain. What a relief that somebody finally told the truth about this.

Deon Vozov is the perfect narrator for this material (with the exception of her occasional use of accents for quotes), and this greatly enhances both the effectiveness and enjoyment of this audio title. If I didn't know better, I'd assume Vozov was the author, her performance is so spot-on; she really seems to "get" what she's reading, and so the listener does too.

PS -- Be sure to check out the Audible listing for the first edition of this book (there are a lot more reviews, many of them better than my scattershot attempt), but make sure to purchase this version, the second edition, as there have been substantial updates/revisions to the text.

This is one of the better teachings on prayer that I've come across. A person of any spiritual persuasion could learn a great deal from this clear, masterful recording, as TNH really gets what prayer is and how (and why) it actually works. Prayer has sadly fallen out of fashion in our self-determined "new age" spiritual culture; I hope this beautiful book will help turn the tide, as the world today needs all the prayers we can manage. (I would also recommend Caroline Myss's "The Power of Prayer". It comes at the subject from an entirely different angle, but is also quite illuminating.)

I've read about a dozen books on fascism and closely related topics -- for obvious reasons -- since November 2016, and this is easily one of the best. Ece Temelkuran describes her country's transition from democracy to authoritarianism in vivid, first-person, all-too-familiar detail. As it turns out, Turkey was a canary in the coal mine; Poland, Hungary, Brazil, the US, and many other countries are now on similar paths. (If you just balked at reading the previous sentence, even a little, you really need to read/listen to this book.) So good I bought a hard copy to read the old fashioned way.
