Historia
When the once-mighty city of Rome was sacked by barbarians in 410 and lay in ruins, it signaled the end of an era—and the beginning of a thousand years of profound transformation. In a gripping narrative bursting with big names—from St Augustine and Attila the Hun to the Prophet Muhammad and Eleanor of Aquitaine—Dan Jones charges through the history of the Middle Ages. Powers and Thrones takes listeners on a journey through an emerging Europe, the great capitals of late Antiquity, as well as the influential cities of the Islamic West.

Dan Jones could write and then read a book about manufacturing table salt and I have no doubt it would be good. Fantastic format and performance. Tons of knowledge and history laid out in an intriguing way.

Don’t write yourself into a story so deep
Revisado: 06-19-24
I thought it was a good ending to the story all things considered, as confusing as the series can be, but two things I didn’t care for… the depth that JR wrote himself into the story was super cringy for me. Just seemed ham fisted and forced. When it was like just mentioned in infinite, it seemed more Stan Lee style cameo, but in this it was…. Too much for me. And the other thing spoiler! spoiler! was I don’t like rainbow and sunshine endings, everyone walks into the sunset. There’s gotta be stakes, by the time the final showdown happened I was barely paying attention anymore because I had a good guess that everyone was going to survive and cherry would get smoked in some obscure way because of her “invincibility“. I was pretty much all in on the other books (infinite 1-2 could get a little slow and wordy at times) but those 2 things kinda sunk it a bit for me. Bray kicked ass, pretty sure I read books in his voice in my head now days.

Mars is changing. Seemingly overnight the once "Red" planet is turning to gray. Something is happening, something unnatural. A team of, literally, rocket scientists figure out a way to send a probe, very fast, to Mars to determine how and why it is changing. However, when the probe is destroyed well short of the formerly red planet, it's apparent that Mars is being used as a staging ground. The only viable target for that staging ground is Earth.

Missed the mark
Revisado: 12-11-22
This seemed to be a case of knowing a little about a lot. Almost all the military fighting stuff was of, close enough where some people may not pick up on it, but just off. No CSM I ever served under would say call him top… ever. That’s a support thing, not a grunt thing. The military simply doesn’t function like they described, at all. Squad/platoon dynamics just aren’t that way. If you’re on a mission to save the world, you don’t just get to say “I want to use my regular line guys”… they would send much more competent guys. There were also a lot of things that I don’t know much about, but that I think was wrong, fighter cutting like a 15 G turn… pretty sure that’ll kill a pilot. Maybe not, doesn’t sound right though. Way too detailed on super complex science, which I have no idea about and most people won’t…. Just filler that serves to make me zone out. Like 10-15 minutes explaining the weight calculation of a space drone. Most of the dialogue is awkward and ham fisted. Who uses the word knockers? And used as an only descriptor of a lady, multiple times. Just classless dialogue trying to be funny maybe. Just came off as lame. Trying too hard to be one of the boys. None of the characters have depth, they keep introducing people, for what you think is a reason….. but nope. Just threw another random person in with crap dialogue and weird conversations. A lot of cursing that seems that it’s coming from a 12 year old who has no idea how to properly. The concept is ok, but not stand out. I don’t care about a single character and dislike most. Also, hooters sucks, makes me dislike the main characters more. The way the enemy attack makes no sense either, feels like one of those karate movies where they only attack the hero one at a time. Most importantly, this reader should never, ever do accents again. The worst I have ever heard. The Hispanic one was bad but the Russian one was offensive… to my ears. My point I guess is, skip this one

But when a bizarre summer fog engulfs his boat, he and his team find themselves in a fight against strange, cruel monsters from the depths of the North Sea. When even their allies are enemies, the Recon Marines must do what they have always done: adapt or die. But with a world of ice and monsters seeking to destroy them, every second is mission-critical.

Pretty bad
Revisado: 05-26-22
So after this first test run in this author I have no desire to listen to another book from him. After the first chapter, I pulled my phone out to confirm my suspicions that he used to be in the marines. Sweet Jesus it was hard to finish, but to write this I wanted to be fair by listening all the way. I feel that he read anspach and cole’s on the same subject matter (and yes they go overboard on the ranger ranger ranger, however I enjoy there’s more, much better writing) and decided to do the same thing with marine recon with different mechanisms for why things are happening. The story is obscure and I didn’t really care the whole way through, that curiosity to suck me in was never there. I was just a paratrooper, but the way his main character worships “master guns”, but the dude burns the plt constantly by not protecting them makes me laugh. The author is out of touch with certain realities in his own claimed field I believe. Way way way too many specific references to gear, just call them nods or nvg’s, I don’t need to know their serial number every time they come up. Marine recon was used in at least every paragraph, probably much more. I honestly think less of force after this book. Of course he only claimed force once, but very obscurely, so I don’t know what the deal there is (there’s a huge difference between force recon and just recon….. at least there used to be). The constant repetition of phrases and specifics of things that only matter to someone who wants to brag about understanding what it means…. Was overwhelming. This book should have never, ever, been written in first person. Makes me think the author is a tool. He “superheroe’s” all but one or two catastrophic situations, but the entire time writes it like “but I don’t know how to sword fight, but then I beat this master demon monster in my first sword fight”. Just garbage. Also he’s constantly going over ammo count, constantly, and it is always absurd. They would have ran out of ammo on night 2 in this story, even if they had nothing but mags in their rucks. Listen, I’m a stickler for being accurate when you want to be specific, so it really may just be me being picky, but I can’t believe this book has over 3 stars. Being nice on these doesn’t help this guy write better books. To the author I’d say: don’t write yourself as a character, stick in 3rd person or whatever, just not first. Makes you seem Uber pretentious. Also, pass these as rough drafts to about 6 different pipe hitter buddies from other units and branches so they can zero the lingo and specifics in to not be so ridiculous. Some synonyms or something.

Udo is chosen to be named count. The title comes with the wealth and privilege he's always wanted, but he has a nagging feeling it will be more trouble than it's worth. Things become complicated as Hanman, counselor to Ditmar the King, coerces Udo into informing against Gerold of the Four Fires, Ditmar's chief general in the war with Walhaz. Udo resolves to play this part to the best of his ability but is soon horrified when that same general convinces Udo into informing against Hanman.

Scattered, predictable, and boring
Revisado: 11-23-21
I was disappointed just seeing Bray was reading this one, nor was any of the others on my A-list. Within the first few sentences I knew this was a narrator that had to be endured and no so much enjoyed. Not a deal breaker for an awesome story, but….. well it wasn’t garbage, but it was slow, and scattered on revealing and storyline. By the time a big reveal comes it’s seeable from a waayyss back. Plus I had lost much interest by the time they happened. I don’t really understand what happened cause book 1 and the entire commune series were awesome. Narration was a massive part of it, but the storyline itself lost steam. By the end I didn’t even know what the point was and I’m guessing it might have something to do with bray not reading.

The galaxy follows a logical structure. Legion Dark Operator Kel Turner believed that. To know the order of battle and how an enemy unit was organized was to know its purpose and how to destroy it. That logic existed down to the smallest scale, down to what made up life itself. To know a molecule’s structure was to know its function - they were one and the same. It was no different for Kel. He was Dark Ops and Dark Ops was him. But the covert action arm of the Legion is changing. And so is he. And if Dark Ops is no longer the same, how could Kel be Kel?

Continuation of a sub par story and narration
Revisado: 08-26-21
I swear I’ve never heard such an awkward use of first names and “brother”. Just a lot of missed attempts at comedy, weird/awkward/obnoxiously sensitive conversations between what are supposed to be bad asses. I swore never to listen to another one of these in the series 2 books ago, but I love pretty much every other book but this series and that garbage ham fisted free one with the marine girl. Just a bunch of touchy feely crap, subpar story, obnoxiously detailed workouts, and just basically putting a bunch of crap in there just to say “hey I am/was a super friend or seal or whatever in real life”. The most important thing that really makes me consider this series a failure is a) the narrator is garbage and b) it 100% misses the heart and soul of Anspach and coles writing together. I get amped up and intrigued with their content. Love it, even savage 2 kept me intrigued and engaged. DX that narrator and Anspach and Cole please edit down doc spears work to be in the spirit of your universe rather than a blow by blow of a sensitive operators tickle fights. Also delete all of the “brother’s” and “operators”. Ridiculous.

Let down
Revisado: 01-26-21
I keep getting the next in this spin off and keep getting let down worse each time. The narrator is all jacked up, his pace and tone are off, way too dramatic at times and makes simple statements seem like key plot points.
I keep thinking these will be better with the both original authors putting their stamp on it, but no it’s the weakest of the spin off series’ by far ( well minus that horrible free one about the the marine lady turned intel spook). I respect doc spears real world accomplishments, but holy Jesus there’s like 3 hours on an uneventful spaceship ride. It’s just a dragging slow story that talks about every tiny aspect of an operation and the plots are just boring. Also why is the 75 of the main dudes maxims or rules of war or whatever at the end? Is that just to ensure I don’t get the next book? Too easy, consider it done. I love this universe but can’t do this spinoff anymore

The folks in Mike Erikson's small New England town would say he's just your average, everyday guy. And that's exactly how Mike likes it. Sure, the life he's chosen isn't much of a challenge to someone with his unique gifts, but he's content with his quiet and peaceful existence. That is, until an old friend presents him with an irresistible mystery, one that Mike is uniquely qualified to solve.

I love how Clines is doing this series, connected but not traditional sequels or prequels. A truly talented author. If you liked the first book, you’ll like this one as well. Porter knocked it out of the park once again as well. Perfect matchup between author and narrator.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

The Iron Wolves are a company of legionnaires whose legendary exploits date back to the Savage Wars. When they are invited to be guests of honor at a ceremony on a small, backwater planet, they look forward to some precious time away from the constant conflicts of galaxy's edge. But when a neighboring country invades, disrupting the ceremony and killing innocents, the Wolves are forced to make an impossible decision. Aid a people pleading for their protection...or obey the cynical orders of their senate to stand down and see how the dust settles.

Sub-par
Revisado: 07-26-20
Not impressed with the performance. It just had way too much drama and inflection that was all over the place. One person he’d narrate great and the next would be garbage. Killed the story. Trying way to hard or something.
The story was ok, but doesn’t come close to Anspach and Cole’s own books. I listened to it twice between a few months and the first time was much better than the second. Too into a new story the first time to notice a lot of the let downs. If you’re big into the GE universe like me, then I’d suggest just listening to it just because. If you’re not that big into GE universe, skip it.
