Some good ideas. Some bad execution.
Revisado: 12-23-24
Spoiler free: the setup is really solid. Potential Nazi ghost ship? Sign me up everytime. When it sticks to that, it's pretty good. It just doesn't want to stick to that.

Nice surprise!

I stumbled upon this title and am so glad I did. The story lures you in with some obvious twists, but then can still zig instead of zag. Very enjoyable! The narration is perfect. All major characters take on distinct personalities. Looking forward to more from Mr. Slayton!

Historia
Jane and William are enjoying their honeymoon at an exclusive couples-only resort…until Jane receives a chilling note warning her to “Beware of the couple at the table nearest to yours.” At dinner that night, five other couples are present, and none of their tables is any nearer or farther away than any of the others. It’s almost as if someone has set the scene in order to make the warning note meaningless—but why would anyone do that?

Meandering
Revisado: 06-24-24
Not sure if the writing or the narration, but no one is likable. I stuck it out hoping that they'd at least stick the landing. Nope.

Historia
Edwin St. Andrew is eighteen years old when he crosses the Atlantic by steamship, exiled from polite society following an ill-conceived diatribe at a dinner party. He enters the forest, spellbound by the beauty of the Canadian wilderness, and suddenly hears the notes of a violin echoing in an airship terminal—an experience that shocks him to his core.

Resoundingly meh
Revisado: 04-22-23
The story itself is decent. Parts can be pretty powerful. The delivery though is just not very good. The male narrators in particular just seem completely disinterested.

Historia
Welcome to Alderley, a magnificent mansion in the heart of the West Country where a grand house party is taking place. The preparations have been made, the guests have been invited, and the staff are on hand. What could possibly go wrong? Let the entertainment begin. The theft of the diamond necklace and the antique pistols might all be explained, but the body in the lake - that really was a puzzle. 'Don't expect me to solve anything,' Inspector Wilkens announced modestly when he arrived to sort out the unpleasantness.

It's...fine
Revisado: 03-11-23
MILD SPOILERS POSSIBLE
I really like a lot of this. Our initial protagonist has a lot of potential. It's a promising setup. As the events begin to unfold, I started to get into it. And then...meh. The local police character struck me as just inconsistent. I'm not sure if it was the writing of the performance. It just didn't work for me. The biggest plot issue I have is the way a certain thing was conveyed to a certain place. Um, really? That's the best you could think up? My eyes just rolled again thinking back on it.
The performance fluctuates as well. Some of our characters are just spot-on. It's when he tries to veer into American accents that it falls apart. They're caricatures, not characters at that point. One sounds like my untalented uncle attempting a Foghorn Leghorn impression. Our reader also has trouble sticking with each of these. It almost becomes laughable near the end when a character is speaking and you can hear the accent transitioning to a different voice the actor is using. A bit better direction could have prevented it certainly.
Overall, it was mostly ok. At times it verged on becoming something more, and then just didn't.

Horrible narration
Revisado: 07-29-22
Without the physical text it's hard to say where the fault lies here. The narration is absolutely awful. Emphasis and flow is spotty at the best of times. That makes the material impossible to appreciate.
