Thoughtful Discourse on the Modern-Day Childhood

First and foremost, this is a very thoughtful discourse on modern-day childhood. He grasps the everyday challenges that technology and society at large have brought to raising children in the digital age. He offers many useful solutions for understanding the effects and combatting the negative outcomes.

At times, he is overly reductionistic and uses circular logic to defend his conclusions. As in, he said it, she said it, I said it, so it must be true, ignoring that all of them could be wrong. The chapter on spirituality is especially problematic since the author is a professing atheist. It reads like an anthropologist's superficial observations on spiritual disciplines without much research or time wrestling with the ideas.

Finally, the free-range parenting approach he advocates for at the end sounds like the author has exchanged one set of risky outcomes for another while ignoring those connected with his approach.

All in all, this book was a mostly thoughtful approach to parenting children in the digital age, with many recommendations for how to approach it differently than society's default settings. It is worth reading, wrestling with the ideas, and drawing your own conclusions about how you may want to change life with children.

Greatly enjoyed this look at American history from each of the historical perspectives. The audiobook having the audio of the actual conversation certainly added to that experience.

My only issue was the Reagan biographer was obviously not a fan of Reagan. He attempted neutrality but it didn't work.

This book needs an afterword part 2 with Malcolm’s analysis of social media. Does Tipping Point still hold up today? I think we watch it speed along much faster than we ever imagined. How can we encourage our present day mavens, connectors & influencers to tip the world towards something good? That’s a worthwhile endeavor.

The final chapters of this book crystalized what it was from the beginning - He reminded us of what was once good and could be again (taken from Field of Dreams). I voted for Romney in the 2008 primary, 2012 primary & general, and would have gladly done so in 2016 & 2024 if he'd ran. The Reckoning is really about the unmaking of a political party, and one lonely man’s fight against it. Would that we all had such better angels to rely upon. If you can't vote for him, vote for someone cut from a similar cloth.

Lots of great leadership resources here, compiled in a compelling story of a young-old school manager. Enjoyed reading a catcher's perspective on baseball & leadership!

Another useful contribution to our collective learning how to stop racism. There are some very practical steps we can all learn to take in our own way to fight racism. How to fight racism is about how we can be good ancestors for future generations to look back upon.

Democracy is a verb that requires compassion & conviction to love our neighbor, walk humbly, do justice, and to have mercy. May we have the courage to do so always.

We seek to belittle and look for the bad in those we see as the ”other” or the ”enemy”. The realities of the War on Drugs and mass incarceration have enabled our culture to see those impacted most as ”the other.” If we have any hope of healing our racial divides we must begin by tearing down the walls of the figurative and real prisons we've built and begin seeing ”the other” as Us.

Not Talking to Strangers

I wanted at least one more chapter in this book where Gladwell takes us on the journey of what it looks like to actually talk to strangers well. This is an insightful look at how we generally fail in the ways we talk to people not like us. We trust the wrong ones and suspect the wrong ones, but how can we learn to reverse that. How can we learn to trust rightly? How can we learn to talk to strangers granting them dignity where it’s due and protecting ourselves when necessary. At the end of the day it is wise for us all to learn this to keep the social contracts in place that bind us together before it is too late.
