Historia
In August 2014 Jenny Diski was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer and given 'two or three years' to live. She didn't know how to react. All responses felt scripted, laden with cliché. Being a writer, she decided to write about it (grappling with the unoriginality even of this) and to tell a story she had not yet told: that of being taken in, aged 15, by the author Doris Lessing and the subsequent 50 years of their complex relationship.

Good prose but not plot
Revisado: 01-10-24
Plot consistently disappoints. Things almost happen. Excellent descriptions of the inner life, but what was going on outside?

Historia
After being rescued as infants from a sinking ocean liner in 1914, Marian and Jamie Graves are raised by their dissolute uncle in Missoula, Montana. There—after encountering a pair of barnstorming pilots passing through town in beat-up biplanes—Marian commences her lifelong love affair with flight. At fourteen she drops out of school and finds an unexpected and dangerous patron in a wealthy bootlegger who provides a plane and subsidizes her lessons, an arrangement that will haunt her for the rest of her life, even as it allows her to fulfill her destiny: circumnavigating the globe.

I looked forward to every chance to listen
Revisado: 11-16-22
As I usually do I got the book out of the library in case I wanted to move along faster, especially because this book is so long. I did not read ONCE because I was enjoying the narration so much. The narrator. Is a genius with a different, recognizable voice for each character, male or female.

Historia
A train stops at a railway station. A young woman jumps off. She has wild hair, sloppy clothes, and a distracted air. She looks Indian, yet she is somehow not. The sudden violence of what happens next leaves the other passengers gasping. The train terminates at Jarmuli, a temple town by the sea. Here, among pilgrims, priests, and ashrams, three old women disembark only to encounter the girl once again. What is someone like her doing in this remote corner, which attracts only worshippers? Find out.

Leaves reader hanging
Revisado: 02-13-21
Although well written this makes a terrible audiobook because it’s hard to follow the subplots none of which are tied up at the end.

Neurosurgeon Eitan Green has the perfect life - married to a beautiful police officer, and father of two young boys. Then, speeding along a deserted moonlit road after an exhausting hospital shift, he hits someone. Seeing that the man, an African migrant, is beyond help, he flees the scene. When the victim's widow knocks at Eitan's door the next day, holding his wallet and divulging that she knows what happened, Eitan discovers that her price for silence is not money.

decent book, a painful listen
Revisado: 10-03-18
The author is an excellent writer but very repetitious. Reading a three page description of disgusting bodily fluids and smells in a makeshift hospital is vivid; being forced to listen to it for what feels like forever is excruciating. Page after page is inner dialogue of our main character agonizing with only occasional action, and the book is over 300 pages long. That's a lot of agony.
