Historia
In the best-selling tradition of Indianapolis and In Harm’s Way comes a “captivating...gripping” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review) account of the USS Plunkett - a US Navy destroyer that sustained the most harrowing attack on any Navy ship by the Germans during World War II, later made famous by John Ford and Herman Wouk.

A good glimpse in to 'ordinary' sailors
Revisado: 04-15-23
A good glimpse in to 'ordinary' sailors during extraordinary times. I found the audio version incredibly difficult to follow because of the many names and the inconsistent coverage of each sailor. I think there were two Kens and that made things even harder to follow which was which. A good story, there was an excellent chapter towards the end, but apart from that, it felt mundane at times, though I think the author did justice to the story by writing the whole of the story of the Plunkett rather than just the exciting parts. My great uncle also died in WWII so I share that search for the whole story as the author evidently did.

Historia
In this last book of a three-volume series, William L. Shirer recounts his return to Berlin after the Third Reich’s defeat. Having fled Berlin and imminent arrest by the Gestapo in 1940, Shirer returned to Europe in October 1945 to verify the facts of the Fuhrer’s death, thus bringing to a close - or so he thought - his involvement with the Third Reich. He describes his return to his homeland and his ensuing careers as a broadcast journalist and author. He describes the McCarthy years and how the blacklist affected his own network, CBS.

not similar to his other works
Revisado: 02-17-23
I am a big fan of William Shirer, however, this book made me slightly less of a fan. It certainly is an honest telling of his thoughts and actions, but sometimes the honesty was either not worth needing a mention, or simply not objective. Overall not wildly exciting or much new that I cared to know about the man.

In the days and months after Pearl Harbor, the lives of Japanese Americans across the continent and Hawaii were changed forever. In this unforgettable chronicle of war-time America and the battlefields of Europe, Daniel James Brown portrays the journey of Rudy Tokiwa, Fred Shiosaki, and Kats Miho, who volunteered for the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and were deployed to France, Germany, and Italy, where they were asked to do the near impossible. Brown also tells the story of these soldiers' parents, immigrants who were forced to submit to life in concentration camps on U.S. soil.

Excellent topic/subject matter but lacks something
Revisado: 09-08-21
I'm a huge fan of this author and his other works. However, something about this book had me wanting something more. It didn't flow well, it took me a while to get through it. By the time the 442nd reached the mountain, the book was nearly over. The actual battle portion of the book was much less than other books that aren't even devoted to the 442nd. Important subject matter, handled in a disjointed way unfortunately.

A few issues
Revisado: 06-08-21
I have a few issues with what I thought was an obvious bias of the historical record. Turns out my assumptions were true based on the author's other books. I have a big problem when authors add their political ideology on to the historical record. It muddies history, and in this case, makes it worth and recognizably stinks. I wouldn't recommend this author, regardless your political leanings.

Historia
When General Douglas MacArthur arrived in Australia in March 1942, having successfully left the Philippines to organize a new American army, he vowed, "I shall return!" More than two years later he did return, at the head of a large U.S. army to retake the Philippines from the Japanese. The place of his re-invasion was the central Philippine Island of Leyte. Much has been written about the naval Battle of Leyte Gulf that his return provoked, but almost nothing has been written about the three-month long battle to seize Leyte itself.

It's a history that should be told - bad narration
Revisado: 05-30-21
It's an important story in history. However, the narration is awful. I normally preview a books narration before I start a book, but I jumped into this one because I wanted the subject matter. Unfortunately, the narration is unlistenable. 1/5. Would not recommend. Book version would probably be good, narrated is not good.

Historia
In the 20th century, the nation had come of age, a brand-new political landscape was taking shape. It was during the 20th century that the US president became not just the leader of the United States but the Leader of the Free World. The US essentially inherited this hegemony from the British Empire at the close of World War II and retained it for the remainder of the century, which gave the country’s presidents a whole new set of problems to deal with. While the Monroe Doctrine had long dictated concern for events in the Americas, the US now became the policeman of the entire world.

I've never wanted coffee more...
Revisado: 12-07-20
I'm sure the authors intent was to educate the reader on the pros and cons of coffee. I found myself craving after a delicious brew of hot black coffee more than ever after reading this book.
Like most of the Audible Originals that I've listened to, I'm routinely left with asking the question, why? What was the purpose/intent/argument of that book. I'm more and more starting to come to the conclusion that audible originals are the 'clickbait' of my library.

A little hoaky. Started incredibly odd, hard to get into. The middle of the book (dealing with the space program) was phenomenal. However, this is unfortunately bookended by an odd start and ending.

Historia
“AIR RAID, PEARL HARBOR. THIS IS NOT DRILL.” At 7:58 a.m. on December 7, 1941, an officer at the Ford Island Command Center frantically typed what would become one of the most famous radio dispatches in history as the Japanese navy launched a surprise aerial assault on the American navy stationed in Hawaii. In a little over two hours, the Japanese killed more than 2,400 Americans and propelled the US’s entry into World War II. Dead Reckoning is the story of the mission to avenge that devastating strike.

Historia
In March 1941 Jimmy Stewart, America's boy next door and recent Academy Award winner, left fame and fortune behind and joined the United States Army Air Corps to fulfill his family mission and serve his country. He rose from private to colonel and participated in 20 often-brutal World War II combat missions over Germany and France. In mere months the war took away his boyish looks as he faced near-death experiences and the loss of men under his command. The war finally won, he returned home with millions of other veterans to face an uncertain future.

pretty good
Revisado: 05-05-20
had a cool 1940s feel to it, though at times it got distracting. My opinion is is that the author took too many liberties in writing his thoughts rather than facts. I have difficulty believing an author when they claim 'Stewart was thinking...', not sure how the author could know (unless he used a diary as a resource) what the subject was thinking. This certainly adds drama, but from a historical perspective it lends to be more historic fiction rather than a true factual description of events.
