Historia
1828. Robin Swift, orphaned by cholera in Canton, is brought to London by the mysterious Professor Lovell. There, he trains for years in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Chinese, all in preparation for the day he’ll enroll in Oxford University’s prestigious Royal Institute of Translation—also known as Babel. Babel is the world's center for translation and, more importantly, magic. Silver working—the art of manifesting the meaning lost in translation using enchanted silver bars—has made the British unparalleled in power, as its knowledge serves the Empire’s quest for colonization.

Thoughtful fantasy about empire and language
Revisado: 04-02-25
I loved this book. As an ASL interpreter, I spent a lot of time agonizing about what it means to interpret and translate and clearly so has Kuang, which makes the struggles and thoughts of the characters compelling and grounded. I appreciate that the magic is just explained enough to make it feel "real" and functional-seeming without getting endlessly bogged down in mechanical details.
The writing can definitely get a little didactic, but, frankly, it's about ivory tower academics and so it feels totally appropriate.

Historia
The steel city of Radovan is consumed by fire between. Stranded in its harbor is the crew of the Kopek, the survivors of a bioterror attack overseas. But they bear scars: their captain, Sibbi, has gone missing; Yat, their newest Weaver, is fighting for control of her own mind; and their Weaving powers are in a badly weakened state. To disable the technology that prevents the group from escaping, Sen and Kiada must plot their way through the ruins of the foreign capital, which is patrolled by a hostile militia, using wits alone.

A worthy sequel that iterates well
Revisado: 09-27-24
I loved The Dawnhounds and The Sunforge is an excellent follow-up, doing a great job of revealing the scope of the conflict and the perspectives of even more of the cast. This is more of an ensemble story than the first novel, following several characters beyond Yat and Sen, who aren't even the most prominent focal characters. I had just assumed Yat was the primary protagonist for the series, but I really appreciated the change and opportunity to learn more about the motives and histories of other characters, both new and old.
Also, the narrative takes place across multiple time frames and perspectives of varying trustworthiness, often interleaved in ways that can make it tricky to tell what exactly is happening when there's a narrative leap. It gets much easier as the book moves along and there's more context. Really, it reminded me of the structure of the second and third Locked Tomb novels, although I think this does a far better job of balancing intentionally letting the reader feel disoriented and being outright obtuse. It does feel rewarding to piece together what's going on, although I wouldn't be surprised if a reread revealed details that only stand out with hindsight.
The final novel in the trilogy hasn't come out yet, but based on this I'm very excited for it.

Historia
The port city of Hainak is alive: its buildings, its fashion, even its weapons. But, after a devastating war and a sweeping biotech revolution, all its inhabitants want is peace, no one more so than Yat Jyn-Hok, a reformed-thief-turned-cop who patrols the streets at night. Yat has recently been demoted on the force due to “lifestyle choices” after being caught at a gay club. She’s barely holding it together. When she stumbles across a dead body on her patrol, two fellow officers gruesomely murder her and dump her into the harbor. Unfortunately for them, she wakes up.

Well-realized characters and a fascinating, inventive setting
Revisado: 09-17-24
I didn't know what this book was about before listening and it was a wonderful surprise. It's thoughtful and humanizing while also having a sharp perspective on how everyone is embedded in the systems of their society. Also, there are magical, queer pirates desperately fighting a conservative theocratic cult threatening to bring about the end of the world.

Pretty sure this is a YA novel
Revisado: 08-14-24
I didn't care for this book, but that doesn't mean it's not worth reading of you have different tastes than I do! I gave up at the 9-hour mark when there's a huge plot development, so *maybe* the final act has some kind of reveal that would reframe it for me, but I think that's unlikely.
The setting has some cool ideas, but becomes incoherent in order for the plot to work in the same way that tabletop roleplaying games often do, e.g., my DM's evil wizard inexplicably storing her world-ending magical gem somewhere with the same level of security as a strip mall Gamestop. That's fine when I'm telling a story with my friends but not something I want in a novel. I also did not enjoy that the protagonists and several other characters (including one claiming to be multiple millennia old) frequently made decisions with the same aptitude as victims in an '80s slasher film, again because the story wouldn't work if they didn't.
If you're down for YA and don't mind those kinds of things, this might be up your alley.
