Historia
In the concluding novel of his epic Civil War tetralogy, Jeff Shaara tells the dramatic story of the final eight months of battle from multiple perspectives: the commanders in their tents making plans for total victory, as well as the ordinary foot soldiers and cavalrymen who carried out their orders until the last alarm sounded. The Civil War did not end quietly. It climaxed in a storm of fury that lay waste to everything in its path. The Fateful Lightning brings to life those final brutal, bloody months of fighting with you-are-there immediacy.

Great second book of the series (counting the prequel).
Revisado: 04-24-18
So much going on in each chapter. You'll want to read it all the way through without stopping, but the book is a little long for that unless you have nothing else to do. I'm on my second reading of the series and I am enjoying it even more than the first time. It will remind you of bits and pieces of your favourite fantasies but it is still unique and fresh.

A welcome addition to the series
Revisado: 04-22-18
Having read most of the Wheel of Time books in the series by Robert Jordan, I find this prequel to be most welcome especially in providing more information about Lan and Moraine. The rest of the book is primarily world building and backstory, and that's just fine with me. There is enough suspense and action to engage the reader so all the history is not boring to those who find that sort of information to be so. I'm looking forward to re-rereading the series with other Tor newsletter subscribers.

The Denver Post hails Craig Johnson's Walt Longmire mystery series as a must-read. Joining the four previous novels - all of which have been Book Sense picks - The Dark Horse puts a unique Wyoming twist on the classic British village mystery. When Longmire meets a woman jailed for her husband's death, he travels outside his usual haunts to discover the truth behind this unusual murder case.

Another great Walt Longmire book
Revisado: 11-15-17
Very unique plot regarding what seems like a cut and dried murder with confession, but evolves into a fast paced mystery with a twist. The usual characters are there as well as a few new interesting additions. Of course one of my absolute favorites, Henry Standing Bear, makes an appearance which adds to the unique nature of these books. I highly recommend the whole series.

I love these Walt Longmire books by Craig Johnson. I would read them just for the interaction between the old friends (the Sheriff and Henry Standing Bear), but fortunately they have many great characters. I'm from Colorado and enjoy the descriptions of life in the mountain west so much, almost like a quick journey home. The mysteries themselves are good and pull you in. I intend to read the entire series and hope even more books are forthcoming.

An intimate look into the daily life of a nurse
Revisado: 06-02-17
Theresa Brown shares a typical 12 hour shift for an inpatient oncology nurse in a large hospital. She is compassionate and honest as she recounts the highs and lows of patient care, including the frustrations of long hours and short staffing, the heavy workloads and concerns for time constraints when trying to tend to the needs of her patients. She knows the great responsibility she is shouldering. She never sounds whiny or preachy, and the true desire to provide the best care possible is apparent throughout. Having worked in the medical field for a number of years in the past made me even more attuned to the deep level of love she has for those in her care. This doesn't mean that you have to be in the medical field to appreciate this book. I would recommend it for anyone who has curiosity about what goes on behind those hospital doors.

Historia
The first storm comes from, of all places, the Minnesota zoo. Two large and very rare Amur tigers have vanished from their cage, and authorities are worried sick that they've been stolen for their body parts. Traditional Chinese medicine prizes those parts for home remedies, and people will do extreme things to get what they need. Some of them are a great deal more extreme than others - as Virgil is about to find out.

Revisado: 10-19-16
What else can you say? Every story about Virgil Flowers is sure to please. They are complex, engrossing and told with what can only be described as an unexpected but most welcome element of humor. I wait with great anticipation whenever a new one is scheduled for release. I always enjoyed Sanford's other tales and still do, but move over Lucas Davenport. There's a new Sheriff in town and he's that f-----g Flowers.

Great Look at the Everest Disaster
Revisado: 09-22-16
Having previously read Into Thin Air, I was glad for a chance to read an account by another member of one of the ill fated Everest expeditions of 1996 which resulted in the single largest loss of life on the mountain. It also provided a chance to hear the point of view of an individual whose actions were maligned in the earlier book. This book is a well-written account of the events and shine a new light on just how dangerous high altitude climbing, especially of mountains over 8000 meters, really is for those who attempt such feats. There is little aid available if there is a mishap, and even less if it is something serious. Aircraft cannot rescue people at these altitudes. Lack of oxygen, even if supplemental bottles are provided, are not enough to overcome the sheer magnitude of stress on the body. Fellow climbers cannot help much as they are operating at the edge of their endurance as well. Often recovery of the bodies is not possible without putting other lives in extreme jeopardy. If you are an armchair adventurer like me, or even if you are a skilled and experienced climber, you will find the book exciting and also very sad.

Twenty years ago, Bill Bryson went on a trip around Britain to discover and celebrate that green and pleasant land. The result was Notes from a Small Island, a true classic and one of the bestselling travel books ever written. Now he has traveled about Britain again, by bus and train and rental car and on foot, to see what has changed—and what hasn’t.

More Brysonisms and Other Reasons to Smile
Revisado: 08-23-16
I always enjoy Bill Bryson"s books. His rather quirky sense of humour matches my own on many levels. I actually prefer them to be read by Bryson as he provides another quality to the reading that most narration can not provide. This particular book is not his most humorous, but it's subject matter is not that well known in America either. We seem to all be so caught up in extolling the virtues of American exceptionallism that we cannot see beyond our own faces. His honest pleasure in the virtues of Great Britain are refreshing and a little bit humbling. For those who aren't familiar with Bryson, enjoy this ramble around a small island. For those who have walked this and other paths with him before, enjoy another of his secret pleasures as your heart and head travel even more curious byways only hinted at last time.
