Dame Judi
Revisado: 06-03-24
This is a wonderful way to listen in on a conversation between Judi Dench and Brendan O’Hea about acting Shakespeare. They go play by play and part by part. If you have forgotten some things the presentation reminds you. Dench has a phenomenal memory and can recite her lines verbatim even after many years. One of my favorite audio books.

1660 England. General Edward Whalley and his son-in law Colonel William Goffe board a ship bound for the New World. They are on the run, wanted for the murder of King Charles I—a brazen execution that marked the culmination of the English Civil War, in which parliamentarians successfully battled royalists for control.

Excellent 17th Century Historical Novel
Revisado: 12-28-22
Robert Harris is, in my opinion, the finest historical novelist writing today. I've read his ancient Rome novels and some of his WWII novels. This one is a big change - 17th century England and America. As usual with him, it is very thoroughly researched. It covers the rise of Oliver Cromwell, his reign as Protector, the execution of Charles I, and the pursuit of the regicides, notably the two who escaped to America (Whalley and Goffe). Much of the novel is based on fact, although the "inspector Javert"-like character (Nailor) is invented. You will learn a lot about the 17th century and Puritanism. The narrator is excellent.

Flann O'Brien's most popular and surrealistic novel concerns an imaginary, hellish village police force and a local murder.
Weird, satirical, and very funny, its popularity has suddenly increased with the mention of the novel in the TV series Lost.

Perfect
Revisado: 07-10-22
I don't generally read magical, surrealistic fiction, and maybe I would have given up on The Third Policeman if I read it. But Jim Norton's narration is the best I have heard. He brings all the characters to life, especially Sergeant Plunk. There is a lot of humor in this book, and the ending is perfect. Highly recommended.

Historia
Destroyed by Vesuvius in 79 CE, the ruins of Pompeii offer the best evidence we have of life in the Roman Empire. But the eruptions are only part of the story. In The Fires of Vesuvius, acclaimed historian Mary Beard makes sense of the remains. She explores what kind of town it was - more like Calcutta or the Costa del Sol? - and what it can tell us about "ordinary" life there. From sex to politics, food to religion, slavery to literacy, Beard offers us the big picture even as she takes us close enough to the past to smell the bad breath....

I really enjoyed listening to this book. The narrator is excellent. However, it helps to be able to look at illustrations. As it happens, I had a physical copy of the book. This was the perfect way to listen/read it.

Poor narration
Revisado: 12-03-18
The Rumpole stories are fun. However, Patrick Tull as a narrator is not up to snuff. I didn't expect him to sound like Leo McKern, and he doesn't. What is annoying is that there are long pauses here and there. The Rumpole audio with Timothy West is, by contrast, wonderful.

Historia
A terrifying encounter with an escaped convict in a graveyard on the wild Kent marshes; a summons to meet the bitter, decaying Miss Havisham and her beautiful, cold-hearted ward Estella; the sudden generosity of a mysterious benefactor - these form a series of events that change the orphaned Pip's life forever, and he eagerly abandons his humble origins to begin a new life as a gentleman. Dickens' novel depicts Pip's development through adversity as he discovers the true nature of his 'great expectations'.

Excellent reading but for the background music
Revisado: 06-21-11
This is an excellent reading of one of Dickens' greatest works. The only drawback is the occasional use of background music, which is wholly unnecessary and a bit schmaltzy. However, there isn't much of this, and I would highly recommend the reading nonetheless.

Great reading of a great book
Revisado: 04-24-11
I had forgotten how much I liked this book. Everyone is familiar with Book I - Lilliput. A few know Book II -Bbrobidgnag. Things get even more interesting in Book III, with its classic satire on abstruse scholarship. Book IV is the best of all. David Hyde Pierce could not be bettered as a reader.
