Good story, not so great narrator.
Revisado: 05-17-23
Good story, not so great narrator. The narrator did a poor job of conveying feeling, especially in that parts that really necessitated passion or high-end emotion. Really deflated the story thr author was aiming for.

Historia
Dinah Lance was eight years old when she overheard the impossible: the sound of a girl singing. It was something she was never meant to hear - not in her lifetime and not in Gotham City, taken over by the vicious, patriarchal Court of Owls. The sinister organization rules Gotham City as a dictatorship and has stripped women of everything - their right to work, to make music, to learn, to be free.

Didn't like the narration
Revisado: 07-21-21
Didn't like the narration. She made the female characters sound like five year olds...all the SAME five year olds. Story was also slow to get moving. Couldn't finish it.

Magic, romance, and adventure collide in Wandfasted, the irresistible prequel to The Black Witch: When they painted Heretics on our barn and set fire to it, I thought that was the worst it could get. Until they sent the dragons. But they didn't count on us having dragons of our own. And they certainly didn't count on Her. Our Great Mage. The Bringer of Fire. The Storm of Death. The Crow Sorceress. Our Deliverance. The Black Witch.

Great story, whiney narrator.
Revisado: 09-19-18
Story was great but it was a bit distracting that the narrorator always made Tess sound like whiney little girl. It is like she only had one emotion the whole book.

Great story, but maybe a different narrator?
Revisado: 03-20-18
Loved the book, a great story and characters. However, I was having a hard time with the author as narrator. I am not sure if it's her accent or she is a mumbler, but at times (especially during high-emotion passages, such as panic or sorrow) I had to back up and relisten to what she was trying to say. I love it when authors narrate their own works, but this one made listening a bit difficult at times.

Loved the story and series, but the performance was lacking. It was difficult at times to determine which character was speaking, or if a section was inner diolog or conversational. Bring back Jennifer Ikeda!

Historia
Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

Started well, ended poorly
Revisado: 07-28-15
Not a fan of George Guidall. He does a poor job as differentiating characters and lacks emotion queues. The story itself was set up for potential, but it's energy petered out to less than a fizzle near the end. The closing of the story was anticlimactic and highly disappointing.

Historia
In the fall of 1888, Jack the Ripper slaughtered five prostitutes in London's seamy Whitechapel District. He did not just kill - he ripped with a butcher's glee - and then, after the particularly gruesome slaying of Mary Jane Kelly, he disappeared. For 127 years, Jack has haunted the dark corners of our imagination, the paradigm of the psychotic killer. We remember him not only for his crimes, but because, despite one of the biggest dragnets in London history, he was never caught.

Mediocre at best
Revisado: 06-03-15
Not as engaging as would be expected for such a horrific time in history. Jack the Ripper is a fascinating topic for me, I have even visited the White Chapel district in London and retraced the murder scenes of Jack. I was expecting a little more suspense, drama, anything! But it never came. Also, the narrator was a bit overly dramatic in his readings than what the story called for. I stopped listening 5 or 6 chapters shy of the end because I was so bored with the story and zoned out. Very disappointed.

Joey's walk between the worlds makes him prey to two terrible forces: armies of magic and science who will do anything to harness his power to travel between dimensions.

Good, but won't be continuing the series
Revisado: 04-08-15
As an archaeologist, I enjoy the Earths Children series for the authors creative interpretation of the archaeological record. The first few books in the series were good, but this book has triggered a disinterest in the series. I frequently skipped pages to fast forward through the MANY pleasure sessions shared by the two main characters. I feel like this book is the shifting point between decent historical fiction (in a way) to cheese romance. I don't think I will be continuing the series.
As far as performance, more clearly defined breaks between chapters and section breaks could be better made, but this may be an editing issue.

Historia
Marilyn Johnson's Lives in Ruins is an absorbing and entertaining look at the lives of contemporary archaeologists as they sweat under the sun for clues to the puzzle of our past. Johnson digs and drinks alongside archaeologists, and chases them through the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and even Machu Picchu. Her subjects share stories about slaves and Ice Age hunters, ordinary soldiers of the American Revolution, Chinese woman warriors, sunken fleets, and mummies.

Great introduction to archaeology for the general
Revisado: 01-31-15
As an archaeologist, it is both difficult and tiresome trying to explain to people what it is that I do (or don't do). This book has taken a holistic, informative, and entertaining approach to explaining the basics of archaeology. Although the author focused on sexier examples of the field (because let's face it, no one wants to read about artifact cataloging or surveying a a chicken processing plant no matter how curios they are about arch), she does a fantastic job at explaining the core values that make archaeologist love their job. I would highly recommend this book as a supplementary read in an intro to archaeology class. Performance compliments the story perfectly.
