Overwrought and tedious
Revisado: 08-20-21
Recommendation from friend who knows I like historical fiction and non fiction. I kept reading thinking it would get better. The main characters- one from the past and one from the future intrigued me; till I read the book. The main characters were more than fleshed out - the details went on and on - leaving out only how many times they went to the bathroom and the outcome. She reiterated “the in between” and over explained it ad nauseun. When a resolution happened, after much hand wringing- the.characters immediately had closure .
I stupidly kept reading because of my friend’s recommendation. I won’t waste my time on another of this author’s melodramas.

Historia
Welcome to Maple Street, a picture-perfect slice of suburban Long Island, its residents bound by their children, their work, and their illusion of safety in a rapidly changing world. But menace skulks among this exclusive enclave. When the Wilde family arrive, they trigger their neighbors’ worst fears. Dad Arlo’s a gruff has-been rock star with track marks. Mom Gertie’s got a thick Brooklyn accent, with high heels and tube tops to match. Their weird kids cuss like sailors. They don’t fit with the way Maple Street sees itself.

Remarkable storytelling
Revisado: 06-06-21
This book sucks you in from the first page. It’s a disturbing story of the power of how little lies fester and grow completely out of control.

Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli. By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Elsa must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family.

A Dust Bowl Tale
Revisado: 03-04-21
Not as spare as Steinbeck, but believable characters living through the despair of the Dust Bowl years.
My only complaint...it’s just me...I wish the narrators would just read the book and not try to voice the characters.

Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

It’s a Wonderful Life redux
Revisado: 01-29-21
Nora, depressed, decides to commit suicide. She winds up in the ‘Library’ where she gets to pick a book and live ‘what could have been’; which she does multiple times.
Could have used some tighter editing, but i can see this being movie material.
Narrator was perfect. I don’t like it when the narrator shifts voices for different characters; and she doesn’t .

A story about an honorable man
Revisado: 04-23-17
This is just old-fashioned good storytelling. The Captain agrees to return a child taken by the Kiowa to her relatives. The story of this journey and how they came to respect and care for each other is the art of the story. The near raider was absolutely perfect. I will enjoy listening to this again.

I've read or listened to every JLB book and I've never been disappointed. Wonderful story with memorable characters. I love Will Patton's narration - I don't think I could listen to a JLB book unless Will was reading.

Historia
Meet Harold Fry, recently retired. He lives in a small English village with his wife, Maureen, who seems irritated by almost everything he does, even down to how he butters his toast. Little differentiates one day from the next. Then one morning the mail arrives, and within the stack of quotidian minutiae is a letter addressed to Harold in a shaky scrawl from a woman he hasn’t seen or heard from in twenty years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice and is writing to say goodbye.

A wonderful read
Revisado: 09-17-12
Where does The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I loved the path of the story; how it kept evolving and surprising me. Harold just keeps plodding along in the same clothes and the same shoes and relying on the kindness of strangers.
What did you like best about this story?
The author kept surprising me.
Any additional comments?
Jim Broadbent was the perfect reader. He makes the perfect Harold - his clarity of speech and delivery made the book so enjoyable.

Historia
Eva never really wanted to be a mother - and certainly not the mother of a boy who ends up murdering seven of his fellow high school students, a cafeteria worker, and a much-adored teacher who tried to befriend him, all two days before his 16th birthday. Now, two years later, it is time for her to come to terms with marriage, career, family, parenthood, and Kevin’s horrific rampage, in a series of startlingly direct correspondences with her estranged husband, Franklin.

This is a book you will need to talk about
Revisado: 07-12-12
Would you listen to We Need to Talk About Kevin again? Why?
Doubt it - I reread very few books
What was one of the most memorable moments of We Need to Talk About Kevin?
The ending is stunning. All the clues were there, I just managed to go right by them.
Which scene was your favorite?
The scene in Eva's map covered office.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No - it was difficult to find anything to like about Eva (main character and narrator); she is vain, arrogant, and opinionated. She had nothing but contempt for the peripheral characters and treated the main characters (her husband and children) in a very cold and disdainful manner. Eva had her own world with her own rules and she had no problem spitting them out in her very haughty way. She has no friends and she doesn't seem to want any.
I had to be able to turn the narration off so I could walk away and think about what I'd heard.
Any additional comments?
Every once in a while a book has a profund effect on me - I was deeply moved by Still Alice, Love in the Time of Cholera, and the House of Sand and Fog. 'Kevin" is another book that will stay with me for a long time. I'm looking forward to discussing it with my friends who read it for their book clubs and get their reactions. This book was very provocative to me because of its premise; I did not expect the very visceral responses I experienced.

Mystery, lust, Ireland
Revisado: 02-25-11
What a great listen - the plotting and pacing were right on. The author did a masterful job with the story within a story. Sure there was sex and foul language. The sex was an important part of the story - and as for the language - well, this story takes place at the current time - and this is how people speak. The narrators really added the 'Irish' to this story and really captured the characters for me. I have to believe that someone is going to snatch this book up to make a movie.
