Historia
Jake Hayes is missing. This much is certain. At first, his wife, Nina, thinks he is blowing off steam at a friend’s house after their heated fight the night before. But then a day goes by. Two days. Five. And Jake is still nowhere to be found. Lily Scott, Nina’s friend and coworker, thinks she may have been the last to see Jake before he went missing. After Lily confesses everything to her husband, Christian, the two decide that nobody can find out what happened leading up to Jake’s disappearance, especially not Nina.

Storyline okay but…
Revisado: 01-11-25
The plot twists were there. They lacked drama or emphasis or surprise element. Maybe not enough skillful foreshadowing, I am not sure. I kept thinking how stupid some of the characters were, which interfered with my engagement to the book.
I’ve commented on the reader before. She was far less overly and falsely emotional in the reading than I have heard from her before. However the hard “k”s are annoying and distracting.

On a beautiful summer day, crowds lined up outside a theater witness a sudden act of extreme road rage: a tap on a fender triggers a nearly homicidal attack. Jackson Brodie, ex-cop, ex-private detective, new millionaire, is among the bystanders. The event thrusts Jackson into the orbit of the wife of an unscrupulous real estate tycoon, a washed-up comedian, a successful crime novelist, a mysterious Russian woman, and a female police detective. Each of them hiding a secret, each looking for love or money or redemption or escape, they all play a role in driving Jackson out of retirement.

Narrator was not to make liking
Revisado: 11-10-24
I didn’t get past the first few chapters. I love Kate Atkinson. I love the Jackson Brody stories.
The narrator’s recitation of the female characters was annoying at first. Falsetto and whiney. When I realized that seemed to be the way he read/vocalized/interpreted the women I had to find something else to listen to

I just finished listening to this book. I don’t think I can articulate what is so good about this story in fewer than 500 words , and giving away too much.

I liked the theme of security, and cybersecurity. The story was often slow. The reading was at a constant high pitch of over drama, to the point of monotony. I found myself wishing I were reading instead of listening

Lots of twists, some surprises, subtlety foreshadowed. I did not care for the female narrator. The constant tension in her voice, always on the verge of tears, was monotonous

Mesmerizing
Revisado: 02-22-23
I look at the moon through different eyes. The writing is spectacular. The performance could not be better. While there are many irrational assumptions of science I was willing to abandon realistic skepticism. Set just before WW II, the story is timeless. It could just as well have been written in 2023.

gentle tale of true heroism
Revisado: 08-10-20
Comparing this book to other WWII works of fiction does it a disservice. I almost didn't listen to it. I am done with the entertainment value of Nazi Germany. This book, based on a true story, melds the horrors of ordinary people during war time Germany to the events of today, subtly but clearly.

trite and predictable
Revisado: 02-12-20
Nice little wifey keeping hubby's job open for him. Brat of a child who at 8 should be old enough to know that a rescue mission is important. Yet his continuing whining makes mom/wifey feel oh so guilty for making him miss his school Halloween party to possible save lives. Or perhaps she feels guilty because she couldn't get hubby to stick around??? I don't really care.
