Why does Oklahoma have that panhandle? Did someone make a mistake?
We are so familiar with the map of the United States that our state borders seem as much a part of nature as mountains and rivers. Even the oddities—the entire state of Maryland(!)—have become so engrained that our map might as well be a giant jigsaw puzzle designed by Divine Providence. But that's where the real mystery begins.

Good reference book
Revisado: 11-10-22
Not really a "read straight through" kinda book. More of a reference to go back to for trivia night. Detailed and informative, it's also quite dry and repetitive.

Hilarious, fascinating, and a roller coaster of dizzying, historical what-ifs, Napoleon's Hemorrhoids is a potpourri for serious historians and casual history buffs. In one of Phil Mason's many revelations, you'll learn that Communist jets were two minutes away from opening fire on American planes during the Cuban missile crisis, when they had to turn back as they were running out of fuel. You'll discover that before the Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon's painful hemorrhoids prevented him from mounting his horse to survey the battlefield.

Good Book, Slow Narration
Revisado: 06-22-21
Good book, and I like the narrator's voice, but... he... speaks... way... too... slow... ly. Had to set the speed to 1.3 to keep from zoning out.

Distracting Narration
Revisado: 05-25-21
Nothing against LeVar Burton; he's a fine actor, and has a soothing voice, but, for some reason, when reading Cosmos, he adopted a rather strange cadence. I read another review stating that it sounded like he was channeling William Shatner. That pretty well nailed it. It was quite distracting, and made the whole experience a little uncomfortable, which is a shame, because this is such a wonderful and poignant work.

Began Way Too Late
Revisado: 04-23-21
The performance was ideal for the subject matter, and the content was very thoroughly researched and well put together, but for a book about the causes of the American revolution, it completely glossed over the Seven Years War, the Stamp Act, and the Boston Massacre. The author begins his analysis in 1772, and harps on the Gaspeé affair over and over and over again, as well as his apparent admiration for Lord North. It was very tiresome.

The rules were simple. He had to make the journey in 80 days using only forms of transport that would have been available to Fogg.

Great Story; Distracting Music
Revisado: 03-16-21
Michael Palin is Michael Palin; I have nothing negative to say toward him. The music, though, that the producers chose to include... ugh. Poor music selection, poor mixing... very distracting and totally unnecessary. I'll still listen to more of Palin's books; I just hope they don't have musical accompaniment.

Fantastic, as was to be expected, however, Nye has since reversed his opinion on GMOs and has rewritten Chapter 30. The 2nd Edition paperback has the revised chapter; this recording does not. Just a heads-up.

An Entertaining Diary of Sorts
Revisado: 02-22-21
It's a good story... not fantastic, but entertaining. A little bit odd in that it doesn't really seem to begin or end; it just is... almost like we're missing the first and last chapter. I did enjoy it, though, and the narrator sounds astonishingly like Charlton Heston, which I found somewhat amusing, because the Norwegian word for "horses" is "hesten".

Robotic Narration
Revisado: 02-18-21
My apologies to the author; I didn't make it far enough into the story to even know if it's any good. The narration is so flat and monotone. He literally sounds like one of those pre-recorded robotic phone tree voices. I just can't. I pushing zero, and screaming at my phone to talk to a human. 🤣
