Historia
"In the summer of 1991 I was a normal kid. I did normal things. I had friends and a mother who loved me. I was just like you. Until the day my life was stolen. For eighteen years I was a prisoner. I was an object for someone to use and abuse. For eighteen years I was not allowed to speak my own name. I became a mother and was forced to be a sister. For eighteen years I survived an impossible situation. On August 26, 2009, I took my name back. My name is Jaycee Lee Dugard. I dont think of myself as a victim. I survived...."

Tough listen, but the authors resilience comes through.
Revisado: 03-19-25
It’s difficult to listen to all that she went through, but it’s written beautifully. The author does a remarkable job of taking you back to what she was thinking, appropriate to her age, at the time. Jaycee Dugard had a tough start, but she has a bright future.

Historia
Julia and her adopted brother, David, are 16 years old. Julia is White. David is Black. It is the mid-1980s and their family has just moved to rural Indiana, a landscape of cottonwood trees, trailer parks, and an all-encompassing racism. At home are a distant mother more involved with her church’s missionaries than her own children and a violent father.

Not an easy listen but well worth it.
Revisado: 06-15-24
Emotionally, this was a difficult book to get through. The author does a fantastic job of putting you in the moment; my heart goes out to her and her brother. I often had to take breaks from listening.
But in the end, it’s a beautiful story of the love between a brother and a sister. You can’t beat it.

Historia
In this searing memoir of survival in the spirit of Stolen Innocence, the daughter of Warren Jeffs, the self-proclaimed Prophet of the FLDS Church, takes you deep inside the secretive polygamist Mormon fundamentalist cult run by her family and how she escaped it. Born into the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Rachel Jeffs was raised in a strict patriarchal culture defined by subordinate sister wives and men they must obey.

The bravery of this woman is astounding.
Revisado: 05-25-24
This is more than worth a listen. I wish that they would use books like this in our schools to educate the rest of the US about what’s going on under our noses. We know it’s there, but it’s pretty easy to just dismiss it as free will of the women in these polygamist cults. Rachel’s story is a must read for those that believe it just takes a little bit of nerve to leave everything you’ve ever known. I am honestly not sure I could do it.
Rachel’s intelligence, bravery and empathy is awe inspiring.

Historia
In August 2015, Limerick man Jason Corbett was murdered by his wife, Molly Martens, and her father, ex-FBI agent Tom Martens, in the bedroom of their luxury North Carolina home. He had been savagely beaten to death with a baseball bat and brick while his children slept nearby. For his sister, Tracey Corbett-Lynch, and the rest of his family in Ireland, it was just the beginning of the nightmare that would involve a custody battle, an online hate campaign, and, ultimately, the gripping trial that would lead to her conviction.

Beautiful story, beautifully, written, and beautifully read.
Revisado: 04-14-24
I’m not sure I could say more about this title. I laughed and I cried, and I deeply felt every step along the way with the author. It was heart-
wrenching and beautiful at the same time.
I am sad to learn about the most recent developments of this case. I have no doubt, though, that Jason‘s children will be safe in the arms of his sister.

Historia
I thought I had a perfect life with a loving husband until… He joined a cult. I wake in the middle of a nightmare, alone in a room I don’t recognize. Far from my perfect life. And I realize my husband is not only my enemy, he’s also the worst villain in my life. He’s the reason I’m here. He brought me to this place because I refuse to follow the rules. His rules. He demands I have a son as our first child, and when the doctor announces we’re expecting a daughter, my husband accuses me of going against God’s vision for us. He thinks The Farm will put me on my path to God. And I...

It’s a good story in desperate need of a good editor
Revisado: 04-07-24
This book is very poorly written, but it had a good story so I kept listening until the end. It did not pay off.
Honestly, this is the first book. I’ve listened to that is read by AI. I don’t think I would have a problem with the AI itself if the book was well written. Unfortunately, the AI just made the typos and poor writing even more glaringly obvious.

Are you inclined to escape the crumminess of everyday life into fantasy worlds? Are you smart and imaginative in a way that isn't really suited to your surroundings? Are you definitely misunderstood, likely angry, and almost certainly depressed? Set Sytes, hailing from the UK, would prefer you stay alive and sort things out rather than the alternative, thanks. He figures there are better opportunities for you out there and lays it all out in a way that's compelling, funny, sharp, and useful.

Laughing through my tears
Revisado: 04-06-24
This book is so well written. I found myself nodding in agreement and laughing at the same time. I also found a lot of really good tips to get myself through the next difficult time.
