Historia
After the loss of his parents, young Jack Thatch first met Stella as a child - this cryptic little girl of eight with dark hair and darker eyes, sitting alone on a bench in the cemetery clutching her favorite book. The body of a man found in an alley, every inch of his flesh horribly burned, yet his clothing completely untouched. For Detective Faustino Brier, this wasn't the first, and he knew it wouldn't be the last. Isolated and locked away from the world in a shadowy lab, a little boy known only as Subject "D" waits, grows, learns. He's permitted to speak to no one.

Well done.
Revisado: 03-03-25
He always has impeccable character development and gives each the appropriate time. Long stories are always hit and miss. This was a HIT; from the beginning to the middle and the conclusion. Don't let the length deter you, this moves fast to the end. This would definitely make a good limited series. The narrators were amazing.

Look past a few things and it's not bad
Revisado: 10-04-24
It's not his best, but the writing still works as does the narration. The well formed characters drove the story and allowed you to look past the blatant "jump the shark" moments. There is a message embedded here, and as we embrace AI, this can serve as a cautionary tale. It's a well paced story which also helps with a satisfying ending. It's worth a listen, especially if you like this author. I don't think this was meant to be on the same playing ground as his others and in his authors note, he sort of eludes to that. We all a love a good Sugar and Spice moment. :)

Eh
Revisado: 07-17-24
It's a basic story with lackluster characters. The narration for the Pike character was over-the-top stereotypical and didn't have to be. His voice was perfect for many other characters, but this one was cringe-worthy. I ended up fast-forwarding because the dialogue wasn't exciting, which didn't help the predictable story. Like with most hallmark-type stories, everyone ends up where you think they will. :)

Historia
When their ex-boyfriends get together and start Instagramming a disgustingly perfect summer of love, Jack and Nate decide to concoct a mutual Insta-worthy summer adventure of their own to prove they’re just fine and everything’s great. Of course, it’s hard to have an epic summer road trip when they’re stuck in a van with Nate's mid-life crisis-bound parents and his annoying younger sister. And it’s been years since Jack and Nate have said more than a few sentences to each other. But their followers don’t have to know any of that.

Simple and enjoyable teen story
Revisado: 07-11-24
Going back in time to high school politics and teen angst is always interesting. It's even better to read books where LGBT characters are front and center, dealing with issues other than being bullied or living in the closet; this story does just that. The two main characters represent opposites and innocence, creating a rich character tapestry. The story is straight forward, but the journey is fun and makes you appreciate the simpler time of a kid. It's a time when a kiss represents something special and something to ponder over. Try this if you want to take a break from reality and explore a time of innocence.

It was a struggle
Revisado: 06-18-24
The narration was the worst I've heard in a long time; add to that, the main character whines and complains CONSTANTLY, and it's exasperated by the narrator's whiny voice. It was absolutely BRUTAL. That said, if you fast-forward most of it, which is what I needed to do after 2.5 hours, it improves slightly. It's less complaining and finally moves into what is the actual plot. The plot is nothing to write home about and would have been better if the characters were better developed. All and all, I wouldn't waste time on this one. I picked it up on one of the 2.99 sales or buy one get one.

Historia
Black Faces in White Places is about "the game" - that is, the competitive world in which we all live and work. The audiobook offers 10 revolutionary strategies for playing, mastering, and changing the game for the current generation, while undertaking a wholesale redefinition of the rules for those who will follow. It is not only about shattering the old "glass ceiling" but also about examining the four dimensions of the contemporary black experience: identity, society, meritocracy, and opportunity.

Meant Well..but fell short
Revisado: 06-01-24
The subject matter will always be relevant, and I applaud the author's passion and desire to get the word out in a structured way. The use of case studies would have better illustrated the points and the reality facing black people in Corporate America; instead, we get textbook-focused content filled with charts and graphs meant to explain something that isn't really tangible. Using personal experiences and other examples with commentary would have been cleaner, shorter, and more succinct. I found myself fast-forwarding over passages where the authors beat you over the head with common sense things. The book CASTE by Isabel Wilkerson was an excellent example of communicating sensitive information while being educated. If you haven't read that one you should. AMAZING. I appreciate the authors for what they have written; it just wasn't the best. The narrators didn't help; one was robotic, and the other just didn't work at all.

Historia
Every investment plan under the sun is, at best, an informed speculation of what may happen in the future, based on a systematic extrapolation from the known past. Same as Ever reverses the process, inviting us to identify the many things that never, ever change. With his usual elan, Morgan Housel presents a master class on optimizing risk, seizing opportunity, and living your best life. Through a sequence of engaging stories and pithy examples, he shows how we can use our newfound grasp of the unchanging to see around corners.

Lightening did not strike twice
Revisado: 05-23-24
Some of the material for this book could have easily been edited and included in the first. The stories shared were incohesive. It's as if he just talked about random things on his mind. In the first book, the stories are tied back to an overarching theme; that is not the case here. I struggled to finish. I'd be hard-pressed to tell you anything I remembered.

Historia
Money - investing, personal finance, and business decisions - is typically taught as a math-based field, where data and formulas tell us exactly what to do. But in the real world people don’t make financial decisions on a spreadsheet. They make them at the dinner table, or in a meeting room, where personal history, your own unique view of the world, ego, pride, marketing, and odd incentives are scrambled together. In The Psychology of Money, award-winning author Morgan Housel shares 19 short stories exploring the strange ways people think about money.

Intelligent. Direct. Short and Sweet
Revisado: 05-13-24
One of the best things about an intelligent writer is their ability to make you think differently about things you are familiar with. The book is filled with "I never thought about it that way" moments, all while using basic concepts. The narrator was a perfect fit. I loved that he didn't overstay his welcome and kept things moving. Sometimes, simplicity is all that is needed. I believe this is one of those books if listened to a second time it will be even better. Final verdict: don't overthink it, just listen, absorb, and enjoy.

In a boarded-up house on a dead-end street at the edge of the wild Washington woods lives a family of three. A teenage girl who isn’t allowed outside, not after last time. A man who drinks alone in front of his TV, trying to ignore the gaps in his memory. And a house cat who loves napping and reading the Bible. An unspeakable secret binds them together, but when a new neighbor moves in next door, what is buried out among the birch trees may come back to haunt them all.

Nice try.... But fell short.
Revisado: 03-19-24
I'm glad it's over. I admire what the author tried to do, but somewhere along the way, she got lost, and so did I. Because anything I might say could give away spoilers, I won't elaborate. If you make it to hour 4 or 5, decide if you want to go on because the cadence will continue and feel like it just goes on and on. Eventually, you'll sort of understand. It's one of those books where you keep waiting for something, and the "something" doesn't mean as much. I wouldn't put too much stock into the high reviews. You've been warned.

Checks all the boxes multiple times. Must Listen!
Revisado: 03-18-24
It is a well-rounded story that never overstayed its welcome in any part. There was always the right amount of detail, character development, and perfect pacing. The author used all his time wisely. Both main characters were very well-balanced. The good vs evil theme runs throughout for obvious reasons, but each origin of the 2 main characters suggests more complexity. The book also had nice secondary plots that didn't get in the way of the primary story. Those characters were developed as well. The narrator was perfect. The book has a beginning a middle and a satisfying end. Do not be put off by the length. It felt like time flew by.
