The powerful debut novel from Alan Brennert, Moloka’i tells the story of Rachel Kalama, a seven-year-old Hawaiian girl who contracts leprosy and is quarantined on the island of Moloka’i during the 1890s. Separated from her family and forced to grow up in the leper colony of Kalaupapa, Rachel experiences intense isolation. But she remains strong, finding moments of joy, and even love. Heart-wrenching Story
Revisado: 04-17-25
Sad tale of a young girl who is separated by her family due to a mis-understood disease. The author did a wonderful job of drawing us into young Rachels life on the island of Molokai. I felt connected to this fictional character and learned so much about a part of history I never knew before.

Enjoyed this book
Revisado: 04-06-25
It took me a bit to "get into" this book. I felt the author jumped around a bit, especially in the beginning. Once the storyline was established, I had a better time following it. I enjoyed the character development and the relationship bonds between each one.

Historia
Connie Chung is a pioneer. In 1969 at the age of 23, this once-shy daughter of Chinese parents took her first job at a local TV station in her hometown of Washington, D.C. and soon thereafter began working at CBS news as a correspondent. Profoundly influenced by her family’s cultural traditions, yet growing up completely Americanized in the United States, Chung describes her career as an Asian woman in a white male-centered world.

A News Anchor worth remembering
Revisado: 03-09-25
I grew up watching to Connie Chung on TV. I always appreciated her tenacity and ability to give the news to the general public without personal bias. (I wish that was true today--so much of the news is filtered through the newswriters personal lens). I enjoyed Connie's story of her personal life and her public life. Thank you for opening up yourself for "us" to get a glimpse into what you are like as a "regular human". This story also has encouraged me to perhaps write my own story (for my family).

Historia
Sleep is one of the most important but least understood aspects of our life, wellness, and longevity. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why we suffer such devastating health consequences when we don't sleep. Compared to the other basic drives in life - eating, drinking, and reproducing - the purpose of sleep remained elusive.

Historia
A powerful, moving memoir - and a practical guide to healing - written by Dr. Edith Eva Eger, an eminent psychologist whose own experiences as a Holocaust survivor help her treat patients and allow them to escape the prisons of their own minds. The Choice weaves Eger's personal story with case studies from her work as a psychologist. Her patients and their stories illustrate different phases of healing and show how people can choose to escape the prisons they construct in their minds and find freedom, regardless of circumstance.

This true story is amazing and inspiring tale of the resilience of humankind. I am deeply grateful for Edith Eger's willingness to share her story of her family, her survival, and the life lessons she learned by enduring this incredible injustice. These stories need to be shared and remembered...and learned from. Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!

Historia
Mary Fawcett refines the healing recipes she’s inherited from generations of women before her—an uncanny and moral calling to empathize with the sick. When witchfinder Matthew Hopkins arrives in her small village, stoking the fires of hate, he sees not healing but the devil at work. Mary’s benevolent skills have now cast her and her young brother under suspicion of witchery. Soon, the husband of one of Mary’s patients is found murdered, his body carved with strange symbols.

Interesting book about the 17th century witch hunt
Revisado: 02-11-25
I haven't really listened to many books about this subject, and I found it very interesting. The author did a great job with character development and the story flowed well. There were plot twists and turns. The ending had some surprises. I would listen to another book by this same author and narrator. Well Done.

Life-changing!
Revisado: 01-29-25
I have been struggling with sugar cravings for a while now and this book really put into perspective why that is happening in my body. I have always been health conscious and physically active--it is very important to me. However, in my latter years I have struggled a bit going through normal female body changes (menopause). I plan to take the advice in this book to heart and implement some changes. I'm looking forward to seeing how it affects my overall health. I have already recommended this book to family and friends!

Heartbreaking story of love and loss
Revisado: 01-20-25
Kristin Hannah is amazing, and the narrator was superb! After listening to 2 of Hannah's books I felt this one started off a bit slow and I wasn't sure where it was heading. But it turned out amazing--as usual! Hannah's character development is masterful. Yes, many of the story details were heart-wrenching but I'm sure we don't even know the half of the reality/pain the survivors of this time experienced. Hannah has a gift of bringing us into the story and making us live it along the fictional characters.

Historia
New York, 1960: For Benny Lament, music is his entire life. With his father’s deep ties to the mob, the Bronx piano man has learned that love and family can get you in trouble. So he keeps to himself, writing songs for other musicians, avoiding the spotlight…until the night his father brings him to see Esther Mine sing. Esther is a petite powerhouse with a gorgeous voice. And when Benny writes a hit song and performs it with her, their collaboration thrusts the duo onto the national stage…and stirs up old issues and new scrutiny that the mob--and Benny--would rather avoid.

Revisado: 01-13-25
I was so engrossed in this story that I didn't want it to end! The character development was great, and the storyline was fantastic! The writing and lyrics of the songs made me want to hear them performed. I can see this book being made into a movie. Amy Harmon is now one of my favorite authors and the narration by Rob Shapiro was amazing...couldn't have been better!
