Historia
Fighting in Sweden for an ambitious warlord, Sigurd Haraldarson and his small but loyal band of oath-sworn warriors are winning fame and reputation. But Sigurd knows that to take on his hated enemy, the oath breaker King Gorm - the man who betrayed his father, a man Sigurd has vowed to kill - he must earn riches enough to build an army. Many believe Sigurd to be Óðin-favoured, but his exploits have drawn the eye of another god, too: Loki the Trickster.

Book. Story. Characters. All awesomeness! This is the Empire Strikes Back of the series and certainly a bodacious adventure. Bates takes a minute to get used to as narrator, not the rumble of Keeble, but definitely the best of the rest.

Historia
When Rome transgresses upon his father's domain that lays between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, Pacorus, a prince of the Parthian Empire, is sent to exact revenge. But fate intervenes and Pacorus and his companions are saved from a living hell by a renegade gladiator named Spartacus. In gratitude, Pacorus agrees to help Spartacus build his army as Rome musters its legions to crush the slave uprising.

A marvelous surprise
Revisado: 02-25-23
With admittedly low expectations, I delved in. I am so glad I did! A masterful interweaving of fictional characters into the beloved slave rebellion story not only made for a delightful story, it also makes very logical reasonings to some of the most curious and unexplained decisions of the strategic genius Spartacus!
While laying the groundwork for future novels, our hero’s encounters provide a surprisingly accurate retelling of history while also providing a rich story.
Amazing battlefield narrations frequently interrupts the fast paced story making it difficult to press pause or drift to sleep. Saddle up, kick up your stirrups and lean into this fantastic journey!

Historia
The tale begins in Dark Age Britain, a land where Arthur has been banished and Merlin has disappeared, where a child-king sits unprotected on the throne, where religion vies with magic for the souls of the people. It is to this desperate land that Arthur returns, a man at once utterly human and truly heroic: a man of honor, loyalty, and amazing valor; a man who loves Guinevere more passionately than he should; a man whose life is at once tragic and triumphant.

It’s not great
Revisado: 10-11-22
Actually, it struggles to be decent. The meandering story manages to evade a climax at every possible turn. If you are looking for battles, blood and glory, keep looking. The setting and spin of the classic tales was great but the execution was soft to say the least. The narrator did the best job possible with the thin characters and lack of activity. The first person narration of Scarlet was unnecessary. I am surprised I finished it as it took more effort than it should have.

Solid characters, prime for TV
Revisado: 05-17-22
A good story, not complicated nor surprising with solid characters and motivations. One could easily make a streaming series of the books without having to cut storylines or characters. The best word to describe the trilogy is “simple” but I do not intend that as an insult. This is a fun trilogy of going a Viking and indulging in all the blood, glory and silver that comes with it. I really enjoyed the ride!

Glorious!
Revisado: 04-30-22
It’s rare to have a satisfactory conclusion to a series as epic, rich and beloved as the Saxon Chronicles. It’s difficult to say farewell to characters that are as familiar as old friends, especially when those friendships have endured the chaos, bloodshed and adventure that the men of Bebbanburg have embarked upon. But alas! Cornwell delivers, and though no voice can animate the series like Johnathan Keeble, Matt Bates displays a mastery and ownership that blossoms this stellar ending into a breathtaking epilogue to the life and trials of Uhtred and his Wolves of Bebbanburg!
