Historia
Tory Bodeen grew up in a run-down house where her father ruled with an iron fist and a leather belt - and where her dreams and talents had no room to flourish. Her one escape was her neighbor Hope, who lived in the big house just a short skip away, and whose friendship allowed Tory to be something she wasn’t allowed to be at home: a child. Then Hope was brutally murdered, and everything fell apart.

horrible narrator
Revisado: 09-10-24
The story was enough to keep me listening. The narrator was the worst! There were no pauses or breaks in the dialog. Very difficult to tell who was saying what, even after slowing it down.

Too long. Too much repetition.
Revisado: 02-01-23
The main point is repeated many times. I had to force myself to finish it. Quoting the signs and people using the N-word over and over is unnecessary. We get it! I grew up in one of the cities mentioned several times in the book. By 7 years old I was aware that I lived in an all white town. I heard the mayor and others wanted to keep it that way. I never heard it called a sundown town. Were ever signs telling people to stay out, who knows? It was explained to me that redlining was the mechanism to maintain the status quo. For people in the majority who don't agree there isn't some magical way to undo a town's racist past and it's reputation. I'm a bit disappointed by the fixes that the author proposes.

Okay-ish
Revisado: 04-19-22
The story was convoluted with a resolution which makes no sense. It ends with questions that are not addressed. One narrator was good but the other was hard to listen to. All the secondary characters voiced by Simon sounded dim-witted, scared or arrogant. Getting to the end was not easy but I usually finish the books I start.

It's Maya Angelou. What's not to love
Revisado: 03-27-22
I loved listening to Ms. Angelou read her work. I have another Angelou book in my library. The speech is very slow and deliberate. I turned the speed up a bit because I am from the fast paced busy world. I wish I contained the patience to listen to Ms. Angelou in the pacing she used.

Historia
At the height of World War II, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, was home to 75,000 residents, consuming more electricity than New York City. But to most of the world, the town did not exist. Thousands of civilians - many of them young women from small towns across the South - were recruited to this secret city, enticed by solid wages and the promise of war-ending work. Kept very much in the dark, few would ever guess the true nature of the tasks they performed each day in the hulking factories in the middle of the Appalachian Mountains.

Historia
In So You Want to Talk About Race, Ijeoma Oluo offers a contemporary, accessible take on the racial landscape in America, addressing head-on such issues as privilege, police brutality, intersectionality, micro-aggressions, the Black Lives Matter movement, and the "N" word. Perfectly positioned to bridge the gap between people of color and white Americans struggling with race complexities, Oluo answers the questions listeners don't dare ask and explains the concepts that continue to elude everyday Americans.

I feel hopeless.
Revisado: 02-12-21
Listening to this made me feel like there is no point talking about race. I consider myself open minded. I've been in some uncomfortable conversations about race. Ms. Oluo says we should have these difficult conversations but then says that Black and Brown people should not be expected to talk about traumatizing subjects. They don't owe anyone an explanation about what they did wrong or why the thing said or done was offensive. Privileged white people should speak up if People of Color are being insulted, marginalized or ignored. But don't do that because it might cause more problems for the POC than you could ever realize and understand. The whole book is full of contradictory statements. I feel hopeless.

Historia
Tucked away in Siberia, there are furry, four-legged creatures with wagging tails and floppy ears that are as docile and friendly as any lapdog. But, despite appearances, these are not dogs - they are foxes. They are the result of the most astonishing experiment in breeding ever undertaken - imagine speeding up thousands of years of evolution into a few decades. In 1959, biologists Dmitri Belyaev and Lyudmila Trut set out to do just that, by starting with a few dozen silver foxes from fox farms in the USSR and attempting to recreate the evolution of wolves into dogs in real time.

Poor lovely innocent girl with a platonic male best friend. Her world is turned upside down when she meets a handsome, dominant, sadist billionaire. 50 Shades of Grey. But the writing is much better on this one.
