Historia
"Mom seems off." Her brother's words echo in Sam Montgomery's ear as she turns onto the quiet North Carolina street where their mother lives alone. She brushes the thought away as she climbs the front steps. Sam's excited for this rare extended visit, and looking forward to nights with just the two of them, drinking boxed wine, watching murder mystery shows, and guessing who the killer is long before the characters figure it out. But stepping inside, she quickly realizes home isn’t what it used to be.

Generational trauma mixed with magic
Revisado: 01-30-24
I really loved this story. The fast pace, the quick wit, the family connections. All or it was wonderful to listen to. I do think the voice actor missed with the Male Leads voice, but that was a small issue in a much bigger complex and well written well performed audio book. It’s a light read with a happy ending, and I encourage anyone to take the time to listen

Historia
Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred.

Oh what a twist!
Revisado: 09-24-23
I think the overall plot of the book is hampered by the author’s giddiness of “pulling one over” on the audience. The story twists and turns it’s way along in an interesting way with some truly wonderful scene depictions, but each twist feels like the author staring at you going “didn’t see THAT coming, did ya.” And if you are well versed in complex mysteries, yes you probably did see that coming. It’s a fun popcorn read. Maybe even fun to read in a group and talk about your predictions, but if you’re very into mystery novels it will seem cliche.

Enemies to lovers without the lovers
Revisado: 04-03-23
The author seemed to have forgotten to add the romance to their fantasy romance thriller. Which would be fine if they didn’t cash into the idea that their characters were in love at the end to lynchpin the plot change.
The main female character never seemed to warm up to her male lead nor come to understand him. Maybe it’s just because she is as dumb as a rock, but it was frustrating to listen to her ask questions that were rather painfully obvious.
Her stupidity did not help the “racism” sub plot, which rubbed me wrong whenever it was mentioned. The races were stereotypes of their stereotypes. One group was the instinctual relaxed nature group, and the other group was the snooty knowledgeable tech group. These weren’t false stigmas, but actually a part of history and culture. Which was an odd take. And the bad stigmas were also true. That one group actually steals. And the other group actually pillages. Makes me think that the author just hated all her creation.
Though I might think the author hates their creation, I know that they hate sex. Because every mention of people having and wanting sex (and there is a lot) is met with disdain, questionable consent, lots of slut shaming, and definite rapey vibes. If the FL was ace, it would have been fine to have such a dismissive view of sex, but in the end, she falls for the ML in a confusing “still don’t trust you” relationship.
Overall the story felt like a first draft, and could have highly benefited from a harsh editor. Small tweaks, large cuts, and some rearranging could have pulled out the themes that the author was going for.

A new favorite world
Revisado: 02-21-23
The world building in this is great. Rarely explained but still there in such a way that it feels real. And the main character is amazing. She’s so different from other revenge takers and yet so real and imperfect and wonderfully good. And she finds a group who are just as storied and solid as she is. It’s a new favorite of mine and a really great read.
