A deceptive reading of a great book

It started out fine for me. I have loved this book since I was a teenager (a long time ago), have read it multiple times, and I was enjoying listening to this full production, labeled as unabridged, with a fine main narrator and excellent actors for some of the characters. But since I knew it so well I started missing things. I don't have a print copy any more, so I couldn't do a word for word comparison. But there were standouts in my memory, like a single line spoken by Duke Leto, or a thoughtful reflection by the Lady Jessica, that were pivots on which whole sections of the plot turned. And I wasn't hearing them. So I got suspicious, checked the reviews here, and found this production is NOT unabridged. This is deceptive advertising. And, sadly, it seems that Audible does not have another reading of this book available in its catalog, one that is genuinely unabridged. This should have been revealed up front, especially as I detest abridged books. A disappointment, and I will not listen to any more of it.

Great story, ruined by narrator

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The narrator's sing-songy delivery suggests he thinks all fantasy books are children's stories. This is serious, dark fiction, not Story Time in first grade, and it deserves to be read straight.

Would you be willing to try another one of Raymond Todd’s performances?

I doubt it.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Absolutely I would see it, if it were made by someone who took it seriously.

Better editing, please

The reader does a very good job. The material deals with pressing public issues and therefore should be read in a neutral tone; this he does. But when he moves to the next subsection of a chapter and reads the title there's no pause, no notice. It comes at me so suddenly I'm mentally playing catchup. This is not the reader's fault. It's the editor's fault.(I've edited and reconstructed a fair amount of audio, so I know.) Just 1.5 SECONDS of dead air before the subsection title would be enough to alert the listener that a new thought was coming along. It all runs together otherwise. Not good.
