Historia
What is autism: a lifelong disability or a naturally occurring form of cognitive difference akin to certain forms of genius? In truth, it is both of these things and more - and the future of our society depends on our understanding it. Wired reporter Steve Silberman unearths the secret history of autism, long suppressed by the same clinicians who became famous for discovering it, and finds surprising answers to the crucial question of why the number of diagnoses has soared in recent years.

Revisado: 07-10-21
Long but well researched. covers a lot of time and territory about a very contorted path to where we are now. If you want tips coping with autism, this is not your book.
if you want to know what autism is and how it was discovered, buckle up! it's a wild ride.

Historia
Right before the wise old wizard Drum Billet died, he passed on his magical staff of power to the newborn eighth son of an eighth son. Unfortunately, Drum Billet never bothered to check the gender of the newborn baby, and it turns out to be a girl. Now his chauvinistic colleagues are forced to deal with a young girl who has all the qualifications to join their all-male profession. Terry Pratchett's third Discworld novel, Equal Rites, asks many provocative questions about magic, where it goes, where it comes from, and why.

intellectual mind candy at its best.

My first foray into discworld. I've been reading heavy stuff like Gravity's Rainbow and needed something less strenuous.
Loving the witches. Narrator is quite good for this genre.

Narrator is okay. The personal stories are important and show how aspies are all different. This collection is like a box of gloves of different styles to try on. If you think you may be aspie, none of these gloves may fit you exactly but you might find several that almost fit and be surprised at how other aspie-gloves are very different from you.

Lester Ferris needs a rest. He's spent his life being shot at, and Afghanistan was the last stop on his road to exhaustion. Mancreu is the ideal place for Lester to relax. A former British colony, soon to be destroyed because of its very special version of toxic pollution. But Lester Ferris makes a friend: a street kid with a comicbook fixation who will need a home - who might, Lester hopes, become an adopted son. But in a place like Mancreu, just what sort of hero will the boy need?

Historia
This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the Earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

Better than fantasy
Revisado: 10-13-17
Wow. Fantasy without cliche. Better integration of "magical" powers than most. Closer to science fiction, without space ships, but with the puzzles of "what if?" Explores the love-hate-envy-distrust that people have for those who are different, but with useful skills. Tension between privilege and oppression, written tradition vs empirical and intuitive exploration is expressed with compassion and simplicity. None of the pompous pretense that cripples most stories I've read about power structures and drastic change. Feels more like a readily accessible Dune (Frank Herbert) than a Tolkien world, but carries the freshness of world building that made those two authors so groundbreaking. An author to fall in love with. Great narrator, too!

The fascinating science and history of the air we breathe. It's invisible. It's ever present. Without it, you would die in minutes. And it has an epic story to tell. In Caesar's Last Breath, New York Times best-selling author Sam Kean takes us on a journey through the periodic table, around the globe, and across time to tell the story of the air we breathe, which, it turns out, is also the story of earth and our existence on it.

Good audio version, well voiced characters, distinct personalities cone across clearly. Good meandering story, some R-rated sexuality, unlike Neverwhere, which was pretty tame and fine for most kids these days. Was sad when I finished the book to have it be over.

unusual and wonderful fantasy
Revisado: 03-31-17
The story itself is unlike any other "fantasy" I've read. Give it time! At first the story feels odd, but this is due to having to develop a world and characters that aren't fantasy cliches. Like much great adult fiction, this story doesn't rush or hint too much are where it is going. By the end I was captivated by the central characters and how well things pull together as a folk tale, but not fairy tale. Easily enjoyable as an adult.
It takes a little time to get used to the narrator, but after listening I understand that it must have been a challenge to create easily discernable voices for a story with lots of conversation between central characters. Each voice comes to be meaningfully suited to the characters temperament. Not perfect, but better than many other narrators.
