Historia
New York City, 1911. Edith Wharton, almost equally famed for her novels and her sharp tongue, is bone-tired of Manhattan. Finding herself at a crossroads with both her marriage and her writing, she makes the decision to leave America, her publisher, and her loveless marriage. And then, dashing novelist David Graham Phillips—a writer with often notorious ideas about society and women’s place in it—is shot to death outside the Princeton Club. Edith herself met the man only once, when the two formed a mutual distaste over tea in the Palm Court of the Belmont hotel.

A Marvelous Mystery
Revisado: 02-02-24
What a marvelous mystery! Such a beautifully painted picture of Gilded Age New York-- and Edith Wharton solving a crime-- well, what more could one want. An incredibly tight mystery, that has inspired me to read more Wharton. I loved THE LINDBERGH NANNY by Mariah Fredericks, but it might be possible that I love this book more.
I listened to this book on Audible, and the narration is absolutely fantastic.

What a fabulous read! I listened to A MATTER OF BLOOD on audible, and I highly recommend it to fans of mysteries, thrillers and police procedurals .
Maiorisi has crafted an airtight mystery. Chiara Corelli, like all great detectives, comes with baggage, and is a highly compelling character. I'll definitely be reading or listening to the next one in the series.

Suspenseful until the very end
Revisado: 12-22-22
I loved this book! The story is amazing, and the narration is truly fantastic. So much tension and suspense-- even when I know (of course) what was going to happen. The writing is just so good. Fredericks keeps the suspense up until the very end.
This book is also incredibly well researched. I was also delighted that at the end of the novel the author provides a note about what is fact, and what is fiction.
This is a must-read (or must listen) for mystery fans, fans of historical fiction--and really anyone.

Historia
When the body of reality TV star Desiree Pierce is found on a playground in the Bronx the morning after her twenty-fifth birthday party, the police and the media are quick to declare her death an overdose. A tragedy, certainly, but not a crime. Yet Columbia grad student Lena—principled, headstrong, and allergic to the spotlight—knows that can’t be the case. Despite the bitter truth that the two hadn’t spoken in two years, they were half-sisters. Lena knew Desiree. And Desiree would never travel above 125th Street. Something is very wrong with the facts. So why is no one listening?

This book sucked me in from its opening moments. The characters are so despicable, and Myles sets it up so you know something horrific will happen. But who will be the perpetrator? Who (if anyone) will suffer a violent end? The performances are also incredible!

An Exquisite and Heartbreaking Thriller
Revisado: 08-03-21
From the moment I started listening, I could not stop. THE INTERPRETER weaves together the tale of a family attempting to escape the Nazis during WWII, with that of an American soldier who serves as an interpreter immediately after the war. Sidransky's characters are extremely compelling, and his writing, both suspenseful and beautiful. I was completely absorbed. This is not a story for the faint of heart. The horrors of war are depicted quite graphically. Sidransky has written a thrilling and heartbreaking tale, one that reminds us that evil does exist in this world, but so does beauty and love.
Duncan Galloway's narration is spot on. He plays multiple characters so well, and the pacing is perfect.

I am a huge fan of Ripper inspired fiction, and I thoroughly enjoyed The Ripper's Shadow! I listened to this book on audible, and the narration was very well done.

A well-crafted historical mystery
Revisado: 04-26-21
A well-crafted and suspenseful mystery. I liked Jane Prescott from the opening of the novel. She is a most engaging narrator and amateur sleuth. The story hooked me immediately as well, and there were plenty of twists and turns to keep me guessing. The historical details were woven into the novel seamlessly. I can't wait to read (or listen) to more Jane Prescott mysteries.

Language defines us as a species, placing humans head and shoulders above even the most proficient animal communicators. But it also beguiles us with its endless mysteries, allowing us to ponder why different languages emerged, why there isn't simply a single language, how languages change over time and whether that's good or bad, and how languages die out and become extinct.
