Historia
Kitty Roberts spends her days searching for the perfect home for two...until her boyfriend dumps her. Devastated, she flees to a tiny seaside village called Pennystrand, where she spent golden summers as a child, before her family fell apart. At first, Kitty’s dramatic escape proves to be exactly what she needs—golden sunsets over warm, sandy beaches, lovably eccentric new neighbors, and even a blush-inducing run-in with Cory Hudson, a floppy-haired local surfer with a heart-stopping smile.

Editorial attention needed for this

A very sweet listen and heartwarming story. I enjoyed the narrator very much and her capturing of the mood and her expression.
Unfortunately there are double takes on the audio that need to be edited out. That doesn't detract from the story.

This has been very strange to listen to. My mind just isn't able to hear and feel Russel and Holmes in another narrators voice. A good story, but took real effort to keep on listening to the end.

Historia
When Huda meets Hadi, the boy she will ultimately marry, she is six years old. Both are the American-born children of Iraqi immigrants, who grew up on opposite ends of California. Hadi considers Huda his childhood sweetheart, the first and only girl he's ever loved, but Huda needs proof that she is more than just the girl Hadi's mother has chosen for her son. She wants what the American girls have - the entertainment culture's almost singular tale of chance meetings, defying the odds, and falling in love.

A capturing and moving book
Revisado: 02-29-24
Looking for a good listen through changing scenarios in my own life, this book was a gift. It connected with my mind and my heart, although I am on a different continent in different cultures and decades. Not only did this help my connection with other people around me, but contributed to my reflection on myself, my own upbringing, belief systems, challenges and views of my marriage.
The narrator certainly made this possible.

Historia
One rainy afternoon in Istanbul, a woman walks into a doctor's surgery. 'I need to have an abortion', she announces. She is 19 years old and unmarried. What happens that afternoon will change her life. Twenty years later, Asya Kazanci lives with her extended family in Istanbul. Due to a mysterious family curse, all the Kaznci men die in their early 40s, so it is a house of women, among them Asya's beautiful, rebellious mother Zeliha, who runs a tattoo parlour; Banu, who has newly discovered herself as clairvoyant; and Feride, a hypochondriac obsessed with impending disaster.

Paradoxical
Revisado: 06-16-23
It is a paradox to me why I couldn't finish this book. I found the writing too stylised, and the narrating too blurred in the variety of accents. I became irritated with the repeated and high-lighted contradictions in all their forms, in the writing. Great author, good narrator, but not in this book, for me.

Historia
Elizabeth Black is the headmistress of a girls' school in 1830s Victorian London. She is also a well-respected author of stories written both for and about the upper-class ladies of Victorian society. But by night, she writes very different kinds of stories - the Penny Dreadfuls that are all the rage among the working-class men. Under the pseudonym Charles King, Elizabeth has written about dashing heroes fighting supernatural threats, intelligent detectives solving grisly murders, and dangerous outlaws romancing helpless women.

Definitely 5 stars for this genre; a penny dreadful about penny dreadfuls, light and witty, layered if not nuanced, but kept me listening and laughing.

Historia
In this world of bribes, vendettas, and swindling, in which heiresses are gambled and won, Trollope's characters embody all the vices: Lady Carbury is 'false from head to foot'; her son Felix has 'the instincts of a horse, not approaching the higher sympathies of a dog'; and Melmotte - the colossal figure who dominates the book - is a 'horrid, big, rich scoundrel...a bloated swindler...a vile city ruffian'. But as vile as he is, he is considered one of Trollope's greatest creations.

The way we live still.
Revisado: 12-27-22
This beautifully narrated book cushioned me through a time of stress. The characters were clear and easy to connect to, the relationship tangles were relatable, and the villian(s) actually generated some compassion in me.
Others have remarked how close to our time Melmotte's ponzi process is; I learnt a bit about how Madoff functioned from Anthony Trollope of 150 years ago. I was also enchanted by his expression, through gentle satire, of gender and class questions. Of course the use of language, too, is deeply satisfying.
I hadn't known about this book, so thank you Audible. I see it is a favourite for many. For me it will come 2nd place to The Warden.

Historia
Miss Pettigrew is a down-on-her-luck, middle-aged governess sent by her employment agency to work for a nightclub singer rather than a household of unruly children. Over a period of 24 hours, as she becomes caught up in the life of Delysia LaFloss, her own life is changed - forever. This charming, funny, light-hearted 1938 novel was a bestseller on its first appearance. Read by Academy Award winning actress Frances McDormand, who stars in the 2008 film as Miss Pettigrew.

Historia
The story delicately balances the concerns of the Mellstock parish choir with a romance between Dick Dewy, a member of the choir, and Fancy Day, the village schoolmistress. While the choir battles for its survival against the new vicar's mechanical church organ, personal conflicts arise over the anachronistic customs of tradition.

Deeply disappointing
Revisado: 10-01-21
Oh how deeply disappointing. I bought this beautiful South African book and was delighted and excited. I checked the narrators resumes and I should have then mistrusted the quality of this listen.
Both narrators have been let down by their voice coaches too. These are neither of them in any way South African accents.
A good book sounds appalling in my ears. I want to support authors from Africa, and am an Audible addict, but I can't listen to this.

Historia
She wanted sanctuary... Helena Reynolds will do anything to escape her life in London, even if that means traveling to a remote cliffside estate on the North Devon coast and marrying a complete stranger. But Greyfriar's Abbey isn't the sort of refuge she imagined. And ex-army captain Justin Thornhill - though he may be tall, dark, and devastatingly handsome - is anything but a romantic hero. He needed redemption... Justin has spent the last two decades making his fortune, settling scores, and suffering a prolonged period of torture in an Indian prison.

If you crave a safe and fluffy listen, this is it. It's gentle and hopeful and the anachronisms can be overlooked.
It is not one I will re-visit, but it served a purpose. Good narration helped.
