You can't change your fate - so throw yourself into battle, because you'll either win or wake up drinking mead in the halls of your ancestors. That's what Finn's tribe believe. But when their settlement is massacred by a hostile tribe and Finn and several friends, companions, and rivals make their escape across a brutal, unfamiliar landscape, Finn will fight harder than he's ever fought in his life. He wants to live - even if he lives only long enough to tell Thyri Treelegs how he feels about her.

One of the best

Not only does this book scratch my "action" itch with some great action scenes, it's consistently funny and interesting throughout. For fans of Abercrombie for sure but this book feels more optimistic than Abercrombie's nihilism. Regardless, this book is now in my top 10 all time favs.

Fun and exciting
Revisado: 01-29-25
Very well written with fun and interesting characters. Awesome action scenes peppered throughout an enjoyable fantasy tale. There is a story thread that has an Indiana Jones/Tomb Raider feel to it that was particularly interesting to me. Some amazing twists and reveals that have me excited for the next one. Huge recommend.

A great sequel
Revisado: 12-07-24
I liked the first book well enough to continue onto the second and I'm glad I did because this turns everything up a notch. More action, more intrigue, and more double crosses. The last 6 hours or so are filled with some great action scenes almost non stop. It was awesome.

Historia
The year is 1348. Thomas, a disgraced knight, has found a young girl alone in a dead Norman village. An orphan of the Black Death, and an almost unnerving picture of innocence, she tells Thomas that plague is only part of a larger cataclysm - that the fallen angels under Lucifer are rising in a second war on heaven, and that the world of men has fallen behind the lines of conflict. Is it delirium or is it faith? She believes she has seen the angels of God. She believes the righteous dead speak to her in dreams. And now she has convinced the faithless Thomas to shepherd her across a depraved landscape to Avignon.

What a great book
Revisado: 11-26-24
I've listened to countless "badass with a sword helps escort a child across a dangerous countryside" type books (it's kinda my favorite genre) but this one stands out from the pack. It's disgusting and beautiful, violent and loving, it has thrilling action and thought provoking choices. It challenges the "solve all your problems with swords" approach most common to the genre. It's simply a great book.

Caught in one feud too many, he's on the verge of becoming a dead barbarian - leaving nothing behind him but bad songs, dead friends, and a lot of happy enemies. Nobleman, dashing officer, and paragon of selfishness, Captain Jezal dan Luthar has nothing more dangerous in mind than fleecing his friends at cards and dreaming of glory in the fencing circle. But war is brewing, and on the battlefields of the frozen North they fight by altogether bloodier rules.

Incredible
Revisado: 06-17-24
Look, there isn't much plot here, things really kick off in the next book, what this book does have though is character and flavor. It's exciting, suspenseful, fun, and funny. You'll hate to love these characters and you'll love to hate them. The action scenes are simply incredible.
The narration is the best in the business. No one does it like Pacey. The guy is straight up doing a one man play, he's not reading, he's acting out this book. Above and beyond the best narrator I've ever heard.
