Historia
When Geraldine "Gerry" Largay first went missing on the Appalachian Trail in remote western Maine in 2013, the people of Maine were wrought with concern. When she was not found, the family, the wardens, and the Navy personnel who searched for her were devastated. The Maine Warden Service continued to follow leads for more than a year. They never completely gave up the search. Two years after her disappearance, her bones and scattered possessions were found by chance by two surveyors.

A moment's pause
Revisado: 11-08-22
I read the synopsis of Jerri's story on Facebook recently before I purchased this book and maybe like other hikers rarely think of things going wrong on the trail but lately the universe is speaking to me about being prepared. This book was only one more affirmation of that. the reality is I don't know how to use a compass and I've heard that I need this skill but where do you learn it? REI maybe? that's my best guess. Anyway I will be learning before my next adventure.
Survival prep is more important to me these days and I will be learning more. I think even more than hikers...hunters are the most in need. Thank you for an eerie but important story.

Excellent Motivator
Revisado: 05-05-22
Perhaps another word for distracted should unbelief. When we don't believe in ourselves and our potential we get distracted from our true purpose which may not be one purpose but a lifetime of purposes. Goff leads you through the meanderings and predicaments of life to come out on the other side undistracted and purpose driven. I think this is a great book for anyone even people that don't believe in God or are not a Christian because you'll find the common thread of goodness. it's up to you if you want to take it a step further. It's very uplifting, kind and interesting. I might read it again and take some notes.

Historia
Alaska, 1920: a brutal place to homestead, and especially tough for recent arrivals Jack and Mabel. Childless, they are drifting apart - he breaking under the weight of the work of the farm; she crumbling from loneliness and despair. In a moment of levity during the season's first snowfall, they build a child out of snow. The next morning the snow child is gone - but they glimpse a young, blonde-haired girl running through the trees. This little girl, who calls herself Faina, seems to be a child of the woods.

A Beautifully Written Winter Story
Revisado: 01-13-22
I absolutely loved this book. The struggle of a frontier life, the land giving and the character development. There's so much realistic touches to the characters but the magical realism keeps you questioning and glued to the story. It is worth the read if only for the detail of surviving but so detailed in the eloquence of survival in one of the harshest places one can live. There is something for many a reader in this tale.

Historia
I heard Emily before I saw her. The harsh smack of heels against cheap wooden floorboards. The loud phone calls. The incessant music. I knew Emily before I met her. Discarded receipts in our communal hallway. Sticky leftovers in the shared food waste bin. Wine shop vouchers in the letterbox. Now she’s gone missing, and I’m the only one who can find her. The only one who can save her. Because I know her best, and I heard everything.

this story keeps you engaged
Revisado: 12-13-21
It's a good book mirroring two women in different types of love with different outcomes.
I was disappointed in the ending. I felt the characters were well developed and the story was long but the ending seemed abrupt and unfinished. It left you hanging with hope but not developing anything.
I read this book very quickly and I don't tend to do that.

Historia
How to Stop Feeling Like Sh*t is a straight-shooting self-improvement guide for women, one that offers frank advice about the most common self-destructive behaviors women engage in. Andrea Owen—a nationally sought-after life coach—crystallizes what’s behind several invisible, undermining habits, from catastrophizing and people-pleasing to listening to the imposter complex or to one’s inner critic. Powerfully on the mark, the chapters are short and digestible, nicely bypassing weighty examinations in favor of punch points of awareness.

Beginner Self Help
Revisado: 08-17-21
I was excited to read this book because I thought it would have some good insight but I was wrong. It was basically an introduction to self help and fairly blah.
I kept reading it though thinking there would be something in there I could focus on but besides the overachiever chapter all the advice was already known. Granted it was well organized and presented things precisely. My favorite section was "how to fix it". Although not someone to just take someone's fix it advice, the sections seemed sound.

Historia
On April 20, 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold walked into Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. Over the course of minutes, they would kill 12 students and a teacher and wound 24 others before taking their own lives. For the last 16 years, Sue Klebold, Dylan's mother, has lived with the indescribable grief and shame of that day. How could her child, the promising young man she had loved and raised, be responsible for such horror? And how, as his mother, had she not known something was wrong?

Grave but Heartfelt
Revisado: 08-17-21
As I listened to this book I tried to put my place in the place of a victim's family.
Sue Klebold I believe would do anything to take away the sadness her son caused so many. I also tried to imagine what it would be like to be her. Someone so scorned and misconstrued. I found it interesting very little was said about the Harris's experience. I kept waiting to hear more about that. This kind of family devastation can only hurt a family so I'm sure they have their own story. I could put myself in her shoes of experience though because of her frank and honest descriptions of emotions and coping.
Honestly I think this is a great book. Very informative on brain health, suicide prevention, grief and maternal loss. It helped me to understand my mother more. It helped me to understand from the other side what parents go through. I struggled with wanting to die every day from 12- 23 years. I was a wreck and I'm sure my mom was beyond her wits end to try and figure out how to help.
I graduated in 1995 from Columbine's rival school. I remember the freshman of my senior year which would have been the age of Eric and Dylan. The freshmen were something else that year. Starting tons of fights in the halls, balking authority, cursing in front of teachers...to say the least they were obnoxious and moreso disrespectful. I know it sounds cliche but they were different. Something in society seemed to have shifted in that age group and I was glad to be getting out of high school. I can't say I was shocked when the Columbine thing happened. I did not follow news coverage as it just hit close to home.
Years later I became friends with a few of the survivors. I learned of their nightmare. I worked later on with people that supplied the blood to several of the victims that night. There was no six degrees of separation because our whole Denver, Lakewood and Littleton communities were affected. It was important for me to read this book to look at this part of history more closely. I trusted Sue Klebold to be fairly objective because she was inside of it and I had listened to her TEDx talk and it was phenomenal. Thank you Sue for sharing your story.
