Historia
Twenty years ago, Cyrus Haven survived a family massacre. The killer? His brother Elias. Now Elias is applying for release from a secure psychiatric hospital—and Cyrus is expected to forgive and welcome him home. In this “brilliant novel” (The Globe and Mail, Toronto), Elias is returning to a very different world. Cyrus is now a successful psychologist, working with the police, sharing his house with Evie Cormac, a damaged and gifted teenager who can tell when someone is lying.

Robotham Keeps Getting My Kids' Inheritance
Revisado: 03-26-23
Is Evie the most interesting recurring character out there right now, or is it that she just bounces off Cyrus the right way? Or is it that Joe Jameson just voices these characters perfectly for me? I miss Joe and Ruiz, but I don't think about it when Cyrus and Evie are seeking their solutions.

Not unpleasant, but not memorable. Good enough for a bargain book. Sorry, but that's as good as it gets.

Historia
A dark, compelling new thriller from best-selling authors Sarah A. Denzil and Anni Taylor. Young backpackers Gemma and Hayley arrive at a remote fruit farm in Australia’s Northern Territory, out of money and desperate for work. The weeks go on, a blur of fruit picking, parties, campfires and wading beneath waterfalls in the nearby hot springs. Until the night the girls find themselves on a dark highway, bruised and bloodied. Senior Detective Bronwen McKay and psychologist Megan Arlotti question the terrified girls.

No Cure for Stupid...
Revisado: 02-15-20
Like Dumbest and Even Dumber. These characters collectively acted in an implausibly naive and senseless manner. I'm embarrassed to have finished it (it was a bargain book, but still a fail). I cranked it up to 1.25 speed, then 1.50 speed, then 20 seconds forward at every opportunity, waiting for someone to do something logical. Didn't happen. The reader was good at 1.0 speed, but had nothing meaningful to read.

Consistently Exciting Ride
Revisado: 01-28-20
Bought it on sale, but in hindsight would have gladly paid full price. Interesting premise and story line and exciting to the finish. I expected to tire of the "lost in the wilderness" concept, but there was so much going on that made me want to keep listening after getting to work. This was my first time listening to Tom Taylorson and I will look for more narrated by him.

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Oscar #3 for Tom Hanks?
Revisado: 11-13-19
OK, I realize it wasn't a movie, but Tom Hanks' read of this excellent book was so vivid, I saw it. I'll just concede the Audie. Probably Mr. Hanks could read laundry labels and receive my rapt attention, but that should not detract from the recognition of Ann Patchett's writing. I have read several of her books, starting with the Magician's Assistant, and they have been consistently excellent; this is right up there. I wouldn't have imagined that I would be so entertained by books without a typical suspenseful ascent to a climax, but rather a comfortable, thoughtful ride along the crest of a wave.

Great Book, Great Book.
Revisado: 08-13-19
I have read/heard all of Robotham's books and thought all but perhaps one were excellent. This is in my top three of his, if not my favorite now. As much as I've enjoyed Joe O'Loughlin, I may like Cyrus as much or more. The interaction between Evie and him is so well written and the story flows and twists so well. I'm going to try to avoid risky situations so I live to see the next book released.

Historia
Harry Hole is not in a good place. Rakel - the only woman he's ever loved - has ended it with him, permanently. He's been given a chance for a new start with the Oslo Police, but it's in the cold case office. What he really wants is to be investigating cases he suspects have ties to Svein Finne, the serial rapist and murderer who Harry helped put behind bars. And now, Finne is free after a decade-plus in prison. When Harry wakes up the morning after a drunken night with blood that's clearly not his own on his hands, it's only the very beginning of what will be a waking nightmare.

A Pleasant Surprise
Revisado: 07-31-19
And here I thought Nesbo was done with Harry Hole and was expecting this book to just be going through the motions, but he delivers. I've read all 12 Harry books and initially the action seemed too derivative of the pattern of some older Harry books, with some early parts a bit over-described, but the patterns twisted and increasingly caught me off guard. A very entertaining and well thought out story.

Great Read of Seemingly Pointless Story
Revisado: 07-08-19
In fairness, I'm not a big science fiction fan, so it may seem unfair to rate this book so negatively. But I do like some science fiction and, by comparison this seemed largely pointless and unsatisfying. R.C. Bray was again, excellent, as he was reading The Martian, which I loved. R.C. has made other mediocre stories seem fairly good. It would be an unnecessary spoiler to specify exactly what irked me the most about the plot line, but it's sufficient to say that the story was initially slow and uninspiring, then became action-filled but ultimately disappointing in the path it took. I even delayed reviewing this for a week, but the aftertaste was no better.

Historia
Two brothers meet at the remote fence line separating their cattle ranches in the lonely outback. In an isolated belt of Western Australia, they are each other’s nearest neighbor, their homes a four-hour drive apart. The third brother lies dead at their feet. Something caused Cam, the middle child who had been in charge of the family homestead, to die alone in the middle of nowhere. So the eldest brother returns with his younger sibling to the family property and those left behind. But the fragile balance of the ranch is threatened.

A Comfortable Trip into the Desert
Revisado: 02-15-19
The story builds slowly, particularly at first, but soon you settle in. By the end I was seeing the potential appeal of isolated, dusty and slow internet. As with her Falk books, Harper's characters were well worth the investment and Stephen Shanahan is the perfect performer for the book.

Historia
Cyril Avery is not a real Avery - or at least that's what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn't a real Avery, then who is he? Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead.

Surprisingly Good
Revisado: 01-27-19
Bought this on a lark since it was on a two-for-one-credit sale; had never heard of it or the author. Was rewarded with one of the best books I've listened to. The story was not always easy, but but so well written that it always drew me back despite its length...and the performance was fantastic.
