overall Connelly delivers but distracted by second theme. Narrator good, but little expressive inflection, no vocal sense of her deep feelings, My ongoing criticism of Connelly’s Bosch and Ballard is that neither has any sense of humor: Never a silly joke, or any light, friendly teasing - these are smart people, good at what they do- but often one note characters, not fully formed people. The procedural narratives keep me interested but wanting more.

funny at times, appalachian culture, small town atmosphere. central character, sheriff, a little too idealized. Richard Ferrone… what’s not to like!

so boring, it’s my last Sandford book, now that he’s just grinding them out. and what happened to the distinctive Lucas and Virgil voices? New and awful narrators.. not even any humor that always added a little zest. Shameful.

Mark Greaney does something rare, for this genre: Several times during this story, I felt the kind of heart-pounding fear I only experience watching movies - only without the visuals! This takes skill! He keeps you on the brink for a while in these scenes: Will the good guy survive? And, indeed, the good guys DON'T always make it, which is sometimes sad, but refreshing, and keeps you guessing throughout. Characters not well-developed, but I listen to this type of book for intricate plots with lots of 'who knew' or how-do-they-do-that' details. Who knew, for example, that there are (?) all woman Kurdish ground troops! Fun adventure!
