Historia
From her raucous musical numbers to turning upsetting news into laughs as the host of The Amber Ruffin Show or in her Late Night with Seth Meyers segments, Amber is no stranger to finding the funny wherever she looks. With equal parts heart and humor, she and her sister Lacey Lamar shared some of the eye-opening and outrageous experiences Lacey had faced in Nebraska in their first book. Now, the dynamic duo makes it clear—Lacey isn’t the only one in the family with ridiculous encounters to share!

Unbelievable... yet so believable...
Revisado: 04-19-25
I loved the first book, and I'm so glad to see the Ruffins are telling more stories- without apologizing or trying to make white people feel better about themselves.
Fellow white people, these are memoirs of our time, and we've all definitely seen (or been part of) this kind of sh!+ in some way even if we didn't realize it at the time. Let's all listen up.

Good stories; Lofi recording
Revisado: 03-13-25
It's so important to hear the myths, legends, and histories of people the colonists actively erased (and actively continue to do so today In the US). Of course, ancient origin stories are all simplistic, but these at least have a bit more nuance than the "good versus evil" ones that the average US citizen is generally fed.
Old, outdated recording, but just call it LoFi and it comes back around to good. ;)

Magical... hostage story?
Revisado: 06-23-22
I love Neil Gaiman, want to like this story, but it feels like we're supposed to believe our protagonist is a sweet bumbling fool who is just too darn in love to understand that it's not cool to literally TAKE A TRAUMATIZED WOMAN HOSTAGE to GIVE HER AS A GIFT to the object of his affection.
Seems like it's supposed to be a cute premise, but it's just horrifying.

So so so well done.
Revisado: 10-14-21
An artful spectrum of stories from the hilarious type to the type to make you grind your teeth in anger- often both, if you're really listening. And you should really listen.
The "real" book might have great pictures as proof of the ridiculousness of the stories, but I am so glad I got to hear the authors' voices on this. It's like listening to 2 sisters telling you banger story after banger story over dinner or something.

Historia
The world will end on Saturday. Next Saturday. Just before dinner, according to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655. The armies of Good and Evil are amassing and everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except that a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture. And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist.

Revisado: 10-23-20
If you enjoy the writing of Gaiman or Pratchett, you'll like this. For Americans, if you dislike "British humor" this won't be for you. As well, it is (gently, sensibly, hilariously) irreverent from start to finish.

Historia
April May and the Carls are back in the much-anticipated sequel to Hank Green's number-one New York Times best-selling debut novel, An Absolutely Remarkable Thing. The Carls disappeared the same way they appeared, in an instant. While they were on Earth, they caused confusion and destruction without ever lifting a finger. Months later, the world is as confused as ever. Andy has picked up April’s mantle of fame; Maya, ravaged by grief, begins to follow a string of mysteries that she is convinced will lead her to April; and Miranda infiltrates a scientific operation.

Great narration, fun, interesting
Revisado: 07-25-20
I enjoy all of Hank Green's work. A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor and An Absolutely Remarkable Thing are so very much Green's fun, poignant, and kind style. He was successful at incorporating true-to-life female, LGBT, and Black voices into the storyline without it being ABOUT that, which I appreciated. Even non-binary pronouns made it in without it being "A Whole Thing" which was awesome. Love the extra interview at the end that comes with the audio version! Great work.

Historia
In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to 'bad people'" (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent meaningful cross-racial dialogue.

A Good 101 for White People Trying to be Allies
Revisado: 11-03-19
This book is a great place for White people like myself to learn group patterns and find places where we need to start exploring ourselves more. The writing vacillates between talking about those group patterns and self exploration that I thought was helpful in getting into my own "fragility" in a way that gives quick emotional breaks to help me build upon my self understanding.
That said, this is not going to be a book for White people who aren't searching for this info already. Rather, it's for those who actively want to be better allies but perhaps aren't sure where to start. The very end of the book I thought was especially helpful for White people to understand how to seek out and deal with feedback on ourselves, and what to do with it.
Admittedly, some of the book felt a bit redundant, but this may be due to the fact that I had been exposed to some of this info before. The narrator was also hard to focus on because while her tone was kind but firm, she rarely changed her tone of voice at all.

Historia
On the surface, the Victorian age is one of propriety, industry, prudishness and piety. But scratch the surface and you’ll find scandal, sadism, sex, madness, malice and murder. Presented by Stephen Fry, this series delves deep into a period of time we think we know, to discover an altogether darker reality. The stories we’re told offer a different perspective on an era which underwent massive social change. As education, trade, technology and culture blossomed, why was there an undercurrent of the ‘forbidden’ festering beneath Victorian society?
