Historia
Alice's journey begins as all good journeys do: hitting on the sales guy at REI. After a tumultuous breakup, a quick career transition, family upheaval, and a sobriety journey that didn't fix her life quite as much as she expected it to, Alice decides that the only way to solve all her problems is to hike the Pacific Crest Trail. But as she begins preparing for the months-long quest, she realizes the answers she's seeking might not be on top of a snow-covered mountain. Especially since she just learned there was snow in California.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew.

Meryl Streep brings it to life!
Revisado: 11-11-23
As clever (though predictable) as the story was, what made it riveting for me was Meryl Streep's incredibly believable narration, and I'd love to know what other books she has done!
Interesting recollective "autobiography" of Lara's life and the choices she made, as well as the well depicted profiles of her friends and acquaintances.

Provocative Premise
Revisado: 11-11-23
The novel and its premise were shared at a spiritual religious service, which triggered by interest in further investigation. Though there were some dragging segments, the overall story was worth listening to. I still think and mediate about the concept.

Historia
"My father had more than 50 children." So begins the haunting memoir of Anna LeBaron, daughter of the notorious polygamist and murderer Ervil LeBaron. With her father wanted by the FBI for killing anyone who tried to leave his cult - a radical branch of Mormonism - Anna and her siblings were constantly on the run with the other sister-wives. Often starving and always desperate, the children lived in terror. Even though there were dozens of them together, Anna always felt alone.

Worthwhile (but depressing)
Revisado: 11-11-23
Very interesting revelation about the polygamist culture and the lifelong trauma it can cause. Incredible to believe that this inhumane form of lifestyle still can captivate its believers, yet encouraging that there are those who eventually see the light and can break free. Glad Anna wrote and narrated it, and that I heard it.
